Due to the air pollution and oil depletion, the interest in regulations of emission and fuel consumption is continuously increasing in automobile industry. So, our society is now facing highly-demanding environmental restriction on automobile industry. Especially some have been trying to reinforce the restriction of emission and fuel consumption of vehicles and have succeeded. Accordingly, these new and stronger restraints have accelerated the development of eco-friendly vehicles, such as HEV, PHEV, EV, and FCEV. However, the internal combustion engines are still expected to remain as the dominant power source for automobile engines. Particularly, gasoline engine, a type of internal combustion engines, occupies more than 70% of global market. Therefore, cutting-edge technologies improving gasoline engine’s efficiency including direct fuel injection, valve timing optimization, and engine-downsizing by using turbocharged engines, are continuously being introduced and developed. Among these new technologies, EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system technology is being used in gasoline engines, usually for HEV vehicles. Also it is widely applied to diesel engines in order to reduce NOx emission. In this regards, the betterment of fuel consumption and the reduction of emissions by applying EGR system, specifically by lowering burning temperature and by changing combustion characteristics, have been researched. As more diverse and stricter environmental regulations are up-coming, more researches and developments for EGR system are being anticipated for overcoming the current limits in gasoline engine efficiency. In this study, the purpose is mainly analyzing the effects of the Cooled EGR System on the combustion characteristics in partial load stage. By optimizing general factors such as valve timing and ignition timing, various tests on different conditions were intended to examine the effects of cooled EGR on the fundamental combustion characteristics, including temperature and pressure. To put it concretely, by varying the EGR rate from 0 to 30%, it analyzed the changes in cooling loss and pumping loss levels in association with the combustion characteristics. Additionally, it also analyzed the effects of tumble reinforcement of VCM(Variable Charged Motion) on the combustion process. Methodologically analysis in this study was conducted by using GT-POWER to practice 1-D cycle simulation. But some characteristics that cannot be analyzed in experiments were analytically studied. Finally, as indicator, by using BSFC(Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) to analyze the effects of EGR system on the fuel efficiency, the results in this paper are intended to specify the effects of EGR system on the emission reduction, especially on the changes in NOx and HC.
