This work investigated optimization strategy to reduce BSFC-brake specific fuel consumption- and brake specific NOx of 2-stroke low speed marine propulsion diesel engine by control cylinder maximum pressure, cylinder compression pressure and exhaust gas by-pass ratio which are important engine operating parameters and changeable during engine operation by using GT-Power. Pressures and temperatures to analyze engine operation status were measured carefully at a selected engine’s 100%, 75% 50% operation load by sensors, crank angle encoder and combustion analysis system. According to selected engine’s 75% load measured data and other information like geometry of each mechanical parts of engine, well-tuned GT-Power simulation model have been established. By using this simulation model, design of experiments to find relationship between three parameters-cylinder maximum pressure, cylinder compression pressure and exhaust gas by-pass ratio- and two responses-BSFC and NOx- was carried out at 75% engine load, and design optimization to minimize BSFC and NOx was carried out by using DOE results. Each parameter range of DOE is practically defined, maximum pressure ±5bar, compression pressure ±5bar, exhaust gas by-pass valve opening angle 0~90deg which defines exhaust gas by-pass ratio. As results, if weighted 75% NOx value have margin to satisfy IMO Tier-II, best strategy to minimize BSFC which increases NOx can be applied. If weighted 75% load NOx has no margin, strategy to reduce BSFC and NOx at the same time can be applied but the amount of reduced BSFC of this case is less than the former. The strategy to reduce BSFC and NOx in keeping maximum pressure also can be applied. This work suggests proper three design parameters value of such cases to reduce BSFC and NOx while satisfying IMO Tier-II NOx limit.
