This study aims to explore in depth a teacher’s roles in young children’s peer conflict situation, and difficulties encountered in the process. Research questions in relation to the above purpose of this study are as follows:
First, what are a teacher’s roles in young children’s peer conflict situation? Second, what are a teacher’s difficulties encountered in young children’s peer conflict situation?
Participants in this research were 10 teachers in charge of classes for young children aged 3-5 at young children education institutions located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. And data were collected from in-depth interviews and journal writing. The in-depth interviews were individually conducted from October 12, 2015 to February 12, 2016, 2-3 interviews and 40-60 minutes per interview for each participant. As for the journals, the participants were requested to write them freely without limitation on amount and frequency, and the journals were collected via e-mail. All the interviews were recorded and were immediately transcribed into data, which were categorized through repeated reviews. And for securing the objectivity and validity of data analysis, internal verification was carried out by young children education-specialized advisor and the research participants. The results of this study can be summarized according to the research questions, as follows:
First, as a result of investigating a teacher’s roles in young children’s peer conflict situation, the roles were found to be observation & waiting for autonomous problem solving, advice based on situation and individual differences, and immediate intervention and arbitration for safe settlement. That is, when it was judged that young children could actively settle a conflict themselves or that a conflict of opinions was not serious, the teachers watched and waited until young children resolved the conflict themselves. In addition, the teachers not only taught methods and skills for settlement in consideration of young children’s individual differences and conflict situation, but also resolved a conflict in person in case of a serious conflict, a threat to young children’s safety, power imbalance, a continued conflict, the use of undesirable language, and so on. Second, as a result of investigating the teachers’ difficulties experienced in young children’s peer conflict situation, the teachers replied that undue interference into a teacher’s conflict intervention method from parents and managers who used CCTV as a monitoring system, or the outside negative view of suspecting them of child abuse aggravated the teachers’ difficulties. In addition, it was found that the teachers also experienced difficulties due to the characteristics of young children who failed to find an alternative solution and could not control their emotion, young children who depended on a teacher unconditionally, and young children who did not express themselves in a conflict situation. Besides, they experienced difficulties caused by differences of opinion about conflict guidance methods between colleague teachers and by a director who meddled in everything. And parents’ high dependency on on-line information, parents with overprotectiveness, and the attitude of parents who ignored a teacher’s opinion also presented difficulty in resolving a conflict. Therefore, the teachers demanded minimum institutional policies for protecting the rights of teachers and young children educational institutions, and parental education for equipping parents with proper knowledge and understanding, together with professional education for enhancing teachers’ expertise. Lastly, the teachers feared the accumulation of young children’s negative experience of peer conflict situation, which results from lack of composure caused by a tight schedule and various jobs in class environment.
