Intra-oral repair of a fractured or damaged prosthesis extends the duration of its use, shortens the repair procedure of prosthesis, and reduces the cost of repair. Recently developed hybrid CAD/CAM restorative materials feature ease of prosthetic repair at the chair-side as well as the combined merits of ceramic and polymer materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strengths of various hybrid CAD/CAM restorative materials and recommended repairing composite resins. Additionally, the shear bond strengths of hybrid CAD/CAM systems were compared with those of zirconia CAD/CAM systems. Three hybrid CAD/CAM restorative materials, including Lava Ultimate (3M ESPE), Enamic (VITA Zahnfabrick), and Polyglass (VERICOM Co., Korea) were used in this study. For zirconia CAD/CAM restorative material, Zenotec Zr bridge (Wieland Dental + Technic GmbH) was used. Four groups designated LUS (Lava + repairing resin), LUA (Lava + universal resin), ENA (Enamic + repairing resin), and PGB (Polyglass + repairing resin) were formed according to the hybrid CAD/CAM restorative material and composite resin used. The shear bond strengths of LUS and LUA were compared to evaluate the effect of the bonding agent. Thirteen CAD/CAM restorative materials (12 mm diameter, 3 mm thickness) were prepared as disc type per group. The material surface to be bonded to the composite resin was treated with 110 µm alumina sandblasting. For bonding between the CAD/CAM restorative material and a composite resin, a pellet-forming mold (6 mm diameter, 3 mm thickness) was placed onto the restorative material. Then, uncured resin was squeezed into the mold, and polymerized by 40 s of light-curing. The bonded specimen was kept at room temperature for 48 h. After 48 h, the specimen was attached to a universal testing machine, and shear bond strength was measured at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. The failure mode of the fractured specimens was characterized by scanning electron microscopy analysis of the debonded surface. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey HSD post hoc test. The shear bond strength of the PGB group was higher than that of the LUS group, and the shear bond strength of the LUA group was higher than that of the ENA group (P < 0.05 both). The values of the PGB, LUS, and LUA groups were significantly higher than those of the zirconia group (P 0.05). The LUS and LUA groups mostly exhibited cohesive failure (in the CAD/CAM experimental specimen), and the ENA group predominantly showed adhesive failure. All zirconia specimens showed adhesive failure. The results for shear bond strength and failure mode show that Lava Ultimate and Polyglass, which have resin network structures, have a stronger bond with composite resin than Enamic, which is composed of a ceramic matrix and infiltrated resin filler. This greater bond strength is the result of the different resin component, network structure, and fabrication process of hybrid CAD/CAM restorative materials. Therefore, resin network-based hybrid CAD/CAM restorative materials should be more useful for intra-oral repairs.
