As the government's policy has been changed from the development-centered and efficiency-centered to the human-centered culture, the concern about the street furniture design and street environments has been rising, which had been considered as functional elements in the past. There are various public facilities that make up street environments. The entrance facility of subway is the one of them. This point connects the ground road to concourse for the subway passengers. After a roof is covered on this point, one space is being formed under the roof. We call this roof as “subway entrance canopy”. This facility is the transportation amenities to minimize uncomfortable and to secure safety when the heavy rain or snow comes. Not only this public facility organizes the street environments but also offers the transfer space connecting the ground road to concourse. Passengers of 1.1 million are passing this point in Seoul metropolitan area. This is a small facility but the symbolized and important facility. This study aimed at enhancing the public facility design for the subway entrance canopy and studying the design evaluation according to the surrounding environments by the each case by field-surveying the current canopy situations and the surrounding environments of the entrance on the subway line 2 and by classifying the current canopy roof finishes and shapes and the surrounding environments. The way of study was as followings; after the theoretical investigation of the concept of the subway entrance canopy, the public design and the historical traits of canopy, performed field-surveying the current canopy situations and the surrounding environments of the entrance on the subway line 2 and classified the current canopy roof finishes and shapes and the surrounding environments. And then we comprehensively analyzed with those data. For the survey, the main-types of canopy were selected with the current situation analysis materials and the objects of canopy types were extracted by classifying the surrounding environments. And the evaluation factors for the canopy design were extracted with the preceding study data. The office workers in Seoul were targeted for this survey for the canopy design evaluation. We analyzed and made conclusions with the survey result of the design evaluation of a panel -type and a glass-type canopy itself (excluded from the surrounding environment), the survey results of a panel-type and a glass-type on the surrounding building and the surrounding road environments. The main research results as bellows; Firstly, the main types of the entrance canopy were mainly classified by standards of the roof finish materials into 4 groups; ① the existing-type (1980’s subway construction), ② the glass-type, ③ the panel-type, ④ the lightweight-type. And the entrance canopy were classified by shapes into open & closed, cross section (Flat, Arc, Gable), and longitudinal section (Flat, Arc, Slope). And the surrounding environments of subway entrances were classified by the surrounding roads of entrance (cross roads, mid-block), the surrounding buildings of entrance (high building, low building, and open space) and the location of entrance on the sidewalk(road-side, middle of sidewalk, and building-side). Secondly, the office workers in Seoul were targeted for this survey of the subway canopy design evaluation. As the result of this survey, the order of important degree on the evaluation factors for the canopy design was the safety, recognition, sustainability, function, harmony, aesthetic, environment-friendly degree. Therefore, the safety, recognition, and sustainability degree were more importantly rated as the subway canopy design evaluation factors. Thirdly, according to the survey results of the panel-type and the glass-type canopy design evaluation itself (excluded from the surrounding environment), in factors of the safety and sustainability degree, the panel-type received the better ratings than the glass-type. In factors of the aesthetic, function, environment-friendly degree, the glass-type received the better ratings than the panel-type. Fourthly, according to the survey results of the surrounding buildings of entrance, in case of the glass-type canopy on the high and low surrounding building and open space, the harmony and recognition degree received the good ratings. In case of the panel-type canopy on the high surrounding building and open space, the harmony and recognition received the good ratings. But in case of the panel-type canopy on the low building, the harmony and recognition degree evaluation received the bad ratings. Fifth, according to the results of the surrounding roads of entrance, in case of the glass-type on the cross roads and mid-block, the harmony and recognition degree received the good ratings. But in case of the panel-type canopy on the mid-block, the harmony and recognition degree received the bad ratings. In analyzing the above comprehensively, according to the result of the panel type and the glass-type canopy design evaluation itself (excluded from the surrounding environment), the panel-type received the better ratings than glass-type in the high-important-factors such as the safety and sustainability degree. However, in the factors of the aesthetic, function, environment-friendly degree, the glass-type received the better ratings than the panel-type and on the surrounding environmental factors of the harmony and recognition degree, the glass-type also received the good ratings. On the other hand, in case of the panel-type canopy on the low surrounding building, the harmony and recognition degree received bad ratings. Currently, Seoul city specifies only the panel-type canopy as standard. Because Seoul city might consider the safety and sustainability degree more important than the other factors according to the results of the design evaluation itself (excluded from the surrounding environment). However, considering the various surrounding environments of the subway entrance in Seoul, it is needed to develop and introduce the glass-type standard canopy, which was received relatively the better ratings in various surrounding environments. This study targeted the object only the subway line 2 in Seoul, and classified the subway entrance canopy and surrounding environments in there. Also, this study only surveyed the panel-type and the glass-type canopy, which has been installed recently, excluded from the existing type (1980’s subway construction), and the walking environments were also excluded from this survey research. Therefore, the scope and contents were limited. So, more study will be needed with overall consideration such as the walking environments, the existing type (1980’s subway construction) excluded from this survey, and how to manage all canopies.
