The territory of a country retains their political regimes, and it is a geographic space which leads to nationals’ identity. Due to the recent globalization and deterritorialization, states’ national border became ambiguous. However, it is more important for Koreans to fully be aware of and understand the geographic history of ‘Dokdo’ that Japan argues to be its territory. Especially, students at school acquire academic knowledge from their lecturers that is generally based on textbooks. Therefore, this research focuses on the contents of textbooks of Korean Geography in order to understand the current education system on Dokdo in high schools in Korea.
The summary of this research is as follows.
Firstly, the territorial education in Korea is for the purpose of learning the overall knowledge of territory, and to propose an action against the territorial issues arising with the marginal states. Secondly, the textbooks of Korean geography are faithfully published reflecting territorial education system; however, contents of those textbooks are not unified therefore some textbooks have lack of information. Thirdly, by reviewing the result of the survey and interview that took place in high schools, it showed that high schools need to utilize textbooks about Dokdo for the territorial education, more efficiently and it needed more learning chances by increasing the lecture hours. The survey and interview have been sampled in convenience, and although representativeness falls due to a small number of samples available, effective opinions from students and lecturers have been put together to support credibility.
Therefore, based on the findings can do the following suggestion. In order to promote further education on Dokdo, continued research on systematic textbook publication and clear standards on composition of contents in public textbooks is a prerequisite. In the situation many teachers and students are much more interested in Dokdo, if the following chages occur, it is thought that better education about Dokdo will be implemented
Firstly, more diverse learning activities in class should be guaranteed education should be enough time for. Much organized territory education is difficult to be realized since the current teaching environment put too much attention to exams and grades. Therefore, been given enough education about Dokdo hours students can face the current situation, and it is to be important.
Secondly, Dokdo is our territory is important knowledge to identify the students to assert it, but are believed to be critical to everyday life, practice, too. What students are required to acquire is the ability to explain the reason why Dokdo is the territory of Korea and to understand the true value of Dokdo. To aim this goal, it is expected to develop more various activities for students. For example, students will be able to get more opportunities to think about Dokdo if some campaign, clubs and creative experimental activities, which do not interrupt the regular class, are used during the commuting time.
Finally, territory education about dokdo should be in cross-curricular. To protect Korean territory including Dokdo, researches on Korean territory should be consistently conducted within the field of various subjects such as Korean History and Geography.
Furthermore, to practice ideal territory education in classes covering Dokdo contents which aims ‘education for territory’ based on ‘education about territory’ and ‘education from territory’, the more organized curriculum and class materials are needed to be developed.
