L. v. Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Cello Op.102 No.1은 베토벤의 Op.102의 첫번째 곡으로 베토벤 후기의 시작인 1815년에 작곡되었다.
J. Brahms Sonata for Piano and Cello No.2 Op.99는 고전주의의 전통적인 형식을 계승하고 그 안에 낭만주의의 양식을 접목해 자신만의 음악을 추구해나갔던 19세기의 대표적인 작곡가 브람스의 실내악 곡이다.

This thesis for masters degree consists of the annotation of my graduate recital program. The thesis specifically deals with Beethoven Sonata for Piano and Cello in C Major Op.102 No.1 and Brahms Sonata for Piano and Cello No.2 in F Major Op.99 . It aims to further the performer's understanding and the knowledge of the great composers and their works. Beethoven’s cello sonata Op.102 No.1 is the first piece of the op. 102 set and was composed in 1815. It was among his first works in his late period, a time by which he had already fully lost his hearing. Beethoven composed the cello sonata op.102 no.2 in the same year of 1815, and these two pieces of op.102 are his last opus for the piano and solo instruments. Beethoven’s cello sonata Op.102 No.1 casts in two movements, and it has more introspective characteristics than the works of his early and middle periods. The cello and piano play as equal importance with polyphonic and romantic characteristics in the traditional sonata form. Brahms’ cello sonata No.2 in F Major op.99 is a representative work among his numerous chamber works. During his lifetime, most of the composers departed from the Classical style to compose the large scale works with the stories which was later called the 'Program Music'. In contrary, Brahms believed strongly in preserving the traditional Classical form and combining that with his Romantic style in his compositions. He was also fascinated by the genre of chamber music, which was not the most popular genre and instrumentation to compose for during his era. Brahms composed two sonatas for the cello and piano out of his 24 chamber works. The work I will focus in this thesis is the second of his two cello sonatas, which was written 21 years after he completed the first cello sonata. This second cello sonata has more musical maturity than his first cello sonata through its brilliance, grandeur and orchestral sound.
