Objectives: This study was designated to establish an effect of End Stage Renal Disease(ESRD) education on Chronic Kidney Disease(CKD) patients. Methods: This study included 238 cases of ESRD patients who started hemodialysis at K hospital in Seoul from July in 2011 to June in 2014. Data were collected from medical records. Duration from CKD diagnosis to starting hemodialysis and type of vascular access were measured to establish an effect of ESRD education. Analysis was performed using the chi-square test, logistic regressions and ANCOVA. Results: The educated subjects took 47.92 months to initiate the hemodialysis comparing with the non-educated subjects required 21.41 months, which shows statistically significant results. Although controlling the influencing variables (residence, the cause of CKD, the stage of CKD), the result was unchanged. In comparing the vascular-access at the time of starting hemodialysis, relative risk of central vein catheter was higher in non-educated subjects (OR=10.54 95%, CI:4.50-24.67) Conclusion: This study shows that ESRD education program arranged for CKD patients has a positive impact to reduce the unprepared emergency hemodialysis and prolongs the duration from the time of CKD diagnosis to starting hemodialysis. Based on these findings, I suggest further research and development of various programs for CKD patients.
