The purpose of this study was to investigate differences between male and female university students of waist-hip ratio(WHR), blood pressure, exercise behaviors, food habits, and stress according to body mass index(BMI). Participants in this cross-sectional study were 206 university students from six university in Jeollabuk-do province. Data were collected from August, 2015 to October, 2015. The research tools were composed of weight(Kg), height(m), waist circumference(cm), hip circumference(cm), blood pressure(mmHg), exercise behavior scale (Seo, 2015), food habits(Mun, 2012), and life stress scale(Chon, Kim & Yi, 2000). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, χ²-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results were obtained as follows: 1. There were significantly different between male and female students in smoke(χ²=31.400, p<.001), perceived blood pressure(χ²=14.762, p<.001), take a course related health(χ²=17.844, p<.001), and the trial of weight control(χ²=9.662, p=.021). 2. There were significantly different between male and female students in BMI(χ²=28.094, p<.001), systolic blood pressure(t=13.184, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure(t=7.760, p<.001), exercise behaviors (t=2.017, p=.045), and stress(t=-3.631, p<.001). 3. BMI of male students were significantly different in age(F=5.514, p=.005), a grade(F=4.917, p=.003), drink(t=-3.196, p=.002), adding sodium(t=2.002, p=.048), take a soup(t=-2.456, p=.016), take a course related health((t=-3.423, p<.001), perceived somatotype(F=48.298, p<.001), and trial of weight control(F=13.932, p<.001). BMI of female students were significantly different in perceived blood pressure(F=3.222, p=.044), perceived somatotype(F=22.746, p<.001), and the trial of weight control(F=13.932, p<.001). 4. There were significant differences in BMI to the following variables; WHR(F=31.157, p<.001), systolic blood pressure(F=19.962, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure (F=17.172, p<.001), and exercise behaviors(F=3.632, p=.014). 5. There were significantly correlated between BMI and other variables in male students; WHR(r=.514, p<.001), systolic blood pressure(r=.238, p=.015), and diastolic blood pressure(r=.326, p<.001). WHR were significantly positively correlated with diastolic blood pressure(r=.287, p=.003), and Systolic blood pressure had positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure(r=.696, p<.001), and their diastolic blood pressure had a negative correlation with food habits(r=-.272, p=.005). There were significantly correlated between BMI and other variables in female students; WHR(r=.544, p<.001), systolic blood pressure(r=.496, p<.001), diastolic blood pressure(r=.438, p<.001), and exercise behaviors(r=.269, p=.006). WHR were significantly positively correlated with systolic blood pressure(r=.337, p<.001) and diastolic blood pressure(r=.245, p=.013). And systolic blood pressure had positive correlations with diastolic blood pressure(r=.608, p<.001), and exercise behavior had a positive correlation with food habits(r=.279, p=.004), and the stress had a negative correlation with food habits(r=-.213, p=.030). According to the study results, it can be conducted that BMI and WHR were to provide relevant indexes for health, therefore this needs to be taken into account for development of health promotion program.
