This study was carried out to investigate the effects of group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application on the progmatic competence of school aged children with intellectual disability. The study carried out group language therapy program organizing a group with 3 school aged children with intellectual disability level 3 and 2 speech-language pathologists including the researcher. Verbal and non-verbal progmatic competence were compared and analyzed with examination before and after the program, through the progmatic competence check-list ammended and supplemented by the researcher. Additionally, the study looked into a positive influence on the conversational acts by analyzing Kakaotalk chat transcripts of each child with conversational acts analysis table by session, and on the maintenance of conversational acts with recovery time for 2 weeks. A Child’s speech-language pathologist and one’s parents utilized the progmatic competence check-list for evaluation before and after the group language therapy program, and the researcher compared and analyzed the transition process in conversational acts with communication acts analysis table. The results of this study were as following.
First, group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application had a positive effect on verbal progmatic competence of school aged children with intellectual disabilities. When child’s speech-language pathologists and one’s parents examined verbal progmatic competence, it generally increased showing risen scores in the examination after the program than one before the program.
Second, group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application also had a positive effect on non-verbal progmatic competence of school aged children with intellectual disabilities. When a child’s speech-language pathologists and one’s parents examined non-verbal progmatic competence, it also generally increased showing risen scores in the examination after the program than one before the program.
Third, group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application also had a positive effect on improvement in conversational acts of school aged children with intellectual disabilities. When the researcher analyzed Kakaotalk chat transcripts of each child with conversational acts analysis table by session by each session, conversational acts including request, response, comment, statement, acknowledgement, organization devices, advanced speech act evenly improved.
Fourth, group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application also had a positive effect on the maintenance of conversational acts of school aged children with intellectual disabilities. Thus, the children all evenly utilized conversational acts including request, response, comment, statement, acknowledgement, organization devices, advanced speech act.
This study proved that group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application shoed a positive effective on the improvement and maintenance in progmatic competence of school aged children with intellectual disability. Moreover, a few advantages of group language therapy program including Kakaotalk application can be detected including intriguing children with intellectual disabilities, good access, easy direction, and available visual feedback. Therefore, it is considered to be an effective tool for language therapy and to have a positive effect as a new medium of language therapy programs.
