This study was intended to investigate empathic ability of affairs of the world of mothers and a relationship between empathic ability of affairs of the world of mothers and verbal development of infants. This study conducted on total 132 subjects as 66 5~36 month old infants and 66 mothers. An indirect language development test, Sequenced Language Scale for Infants(SELSI; Kim Young-Tae et al., 2003) was used as a tool for evaluating language development of infants, and questionnaire of empathic ability of Park Sung-Hee(1997) that modified and supplemented Davis’(1980) IRI Test and Bryant’s(1982) empathic awake evaluation were used to measure mothers’ empathic ability of affairs of the world. Results of the data analysis are as follows. First, mothers’ empathic ability of affairs of the world did not show significant difference by age, highest level of education, and employment status of mothers, but showed significant difference by type of family. Empathic ability of affairs of the world of mothers with nuclear family are reported to be higher than mothers with large family. Secondly, it was identified that mothers’ empathic ability of affairs of the world is related with general verbal development of infants. Receptive language and expressive language of infants with high empathic ability of affairs of the world of mothers were higher. Thirdly, among empathic abilities of affairs of the world of mothers, cognitive empathy showed correlation with receptive language and expressive language of infants, but emotional empathy did not show significant correlation with verbal development of infants. Therefore, among empathic abilities of affairs of the world of mothers, cognitive empathy was related with verbal development of infants, and this study suggested the necessity of research on a relationship between nurturing empathy that mothers, a main fosterer, have toward their children and verbal development of infants.
