Life Time Study on the Social Roles of the Elderly; Focusing on employment, caring, and social involvement원문보기

Recently, the population of people aged 65 or higher is increasing rapidly. A policy strategy that has been receiving much attention under these circumstances as various elderly-related issues and social gap problems have became urgent is expanding the social roles that the elderly can fulfil. In this paper, I analyzed how the elderly spend their time for their social roles, especially in terms of employment, caring activities, and social involvement. The data was based on survey data from a lifetime examination by the National Statistical Office that was done a total of four times every five years from 1999 to 2014; these trends were then analyzed and the results are as follows. The first section looked at employment as a part of the social roles of the elderly over the age of 65. The results showed that the actual labor participation rate and hours worked by the elderly are both decreasing. In other words, the trend showed that the percentage of the elderly who are working is declining and their working hours are gradually reduced. The second section looked at caring activities. According to the results, it appears that caring practices and caring hours of the elderly are decreasing. In addition, the caring hours for children are declining, while caring hours for spouses and other family members are increasing. The third section looked at social involvement. Only three to four percent of the elderly aged 65 and over who participated in the survey were involved in social activities and the average number of hours seemed in decline. In addition, by gender, males' social involvement proportion is decreasing, while females' is increasing. Further, the age group that performs social roles for the elderly is becoming more aged, and their education level is increasing. This trend follows the extension of average life expectancy. I have analyzed the trends of how the elderly spend their time in their social roles, especially in terms of employment, caring activities, and social involvement. The results for all three social roles showed that the proportion of all activities was either reduced or stagnant, while activity hours showed a declining trend. In other words, these trends showed that social problems such as economic poverty among the elderly, suicidal issues, and the like can possibly become more serious. Therefore, it is necessary to have long-term detailed policy considerations and a focus on the social roles of the elderly. Also, I think it is more necessary to develop government-supported policies for employment expansion as well as to allocate resources for the elderly together with the expansion of old age pension to secure retirement income at the national level. Lastly, more easily accessible measures for social involvement of the elderly should be examined.
