This research aimed to investigate the change in muscle activity of lower limb muscle, when patellofemoral pain syndrome patients performed single limb squat with differing directions of resistance applied to their hip joints. 33 subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome exercised single limb squat with knees flexed at 60 degree and three different resistances, abductive, adductive, and without force, were applied to their hip joint at each trial. Muscle activation was measured from vastus medialis oblique, vastus lateralis, gluteus medius, tensor fasciae latae, semitendinosus, biceps femoris, and gluteus maximus, using surface electromyography. Comparative analyses were done on the acquired data. The result indicated that the muscle activations of vastus medialis oblique, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and gluteus medius show statistically significant change (p0.05). The muscle activation of vastus medialis oblique changed significantly in without force and adductive resistance comparison and abductive and adductive resistance comparison. It showed the highest muscle activation during adductive resistance exercise. Muscle activation of biceps femoris showed statistically significant change in all comparisons, with its highest value also peaking during adductive resistance exercise. Muscle activation of semitendinosus showed significant change only in abductive and adductive comparison but still showed the highest activation during adductive resistance exercise. Muscle activation of gluteus medius showed significant change in without force and adductive resistance comparison and abductive and adductive resistance comparison. Its value also peaked during adductive resistance exercise. Taken together, a functional exercise such as a single limb squat with adductive resistance may serve as an efficient therapeutic means for patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome.
