Archival moving image materials are vividly conveying the images of the records at the time of production through video and audio, and are historical records of great value as they reflect the phases of the times. In order to effectively manage, preserve and utilize them, precise description are required to grasp the characteristics of archival moving image materials and to collect management information. However, since the existing descriptive standards are general archival descriptive rules applied to all records regardless of media, they are not suitable for archival moving image materials in which description of physical and technical characteristics and management and preservation are important to archivist. Therefore, this study focused on proposing a descriptive elements of archival moving image materials reflecting their characteristics. First, the types and characteristics of archival moving image materials and the development process of record descriptive standards were searched. Next, MAD3, RAD2, LCDRG, Archival Description Rules Version 2.0(National Archives of Korea) were analyzed which include descriptive elements of archival moving image materials among general archival descriptive rules. And descriptive elements of AMIM2, FIAF Manual, and UCLA FATA CPMV that is professional descriptive standards of archival moving image materials were also analyzed. In addition, IASA Rules, which is descriptive standards of sound record, was investigated to supplement the technical characteristics that are devoted to video only. Then, these standards were compared and analyzed based on the descriptive area of ISAD(G)2. Finally, based on the results of the analysis, proposed a descriptive element of archival moving image materials consisting of information sources, descriptive area, and descriptive elements. The proposal is summarized as follows: 1. The proposal consisted of 8 descriptive areas and 38 descriptive elements. 2. The identity statement area is an area for describing the unique information to identify archival moving image materials, and are composed of reference code, title, name of creator, date, level of description, extent and medium of the unit of description. 3. The archival description area is an area for describing the background and content of the production of archival moving image materials, and are composed of scope and content, administrative / biographical history, cast / credit history, and appraisal / transfer / archival history. 4. The physical and technical characteristics area is an area for describing physical characteristics of archival moving image materials and the technical characteristics used at the time of production, and are composed of storage method, carrier type, carrier stock, physical size of carrier, base, duration, frame rate, film element type, projection characteristics, sound characteristics, and color characteristics. 5. The management and preservation area is an area for describing the information to manage and preserve various types of archival moving image materials, and are composed of appraisal, destruction, scheduling information, system of arrangement, conservation history, conservation method, and precautions of using. 6. The conditions of access and use area is an area for describing the information necessary for accessing and using records, and are composed of conditions governing access, conditions governing reproduction, language, and finding aids. 7. The allied materials area is an area for describing the information of relationship between archival moving image materials and other records, and the original and the copy, and are composed of existence and location of originals, existence and location of copies, related units of description, publication · distribution · broadcasting related information. 8. The note area is an area for describing in the case where all the descriptive elements proposed above are not explained, and is composed of note. 9. The description control area is an area for specifying the responsibilities of description information, and are composed of archivist’s note, rules or conventions, and date(s) of descriptions. Afterwards, the proposal was applied to ‘Korea News’ that is holded in the National Archives of Korea as archival moving image materials.
