Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have been utilized as promising power sources for mobile devices, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. To increase the energy storage capacity of LIBs, novel anode and cathode materials having excellent electrochemical properties have been intensively studied. In this thesis, Li2MnO3 and Si-based electrode materials and structures were synthesized and characterized. 1. Mesoporous Li2MnO3/Li4Mn5O12 composite cathodes were prepared from inverse micelle structure for high-performance LIBs. The relative ratio of layered Li2MnO3 to spinel Li4Mn5O12 in the composite electrodes could be elaborately controlled as a function of molar ratio of LiNO3 to Mn(NO3)2 in the precursor. The whole discharge capacities of Li4Mn5O12/Li2MnO3 composite cathodes contained the complicated electrochemical contribution by layered and spinel components. 2. Li2MnO3 cathode materials were coated with TiO2 (OLO@TiO2) for high-performance LIBs. The ratio of layered Li2MnO3 to anatase TiO2 as well as the shell thickness in the Li2MnO3@TiO2 cathodes were controlled by increasing the addition of titanium butoxide. In particular, OLO@TiO2 exhibited high specific capacity, improved high rate cycling performance, and excellent cycle life due to the low interface resistance and high diffusion coefficient of lithium ion, compared with the uncoated Li2MnO3 cathode. 3. A paper-type Si-carbon nanofiber-composite electrode (Si/CNF-P) as a binder/current collector-free anode for LIBs was prepared using an electrospinning method. The electrospun 3-D Si/CNF-P exhibited a high retention rate and enhanced cycle performance for 400 cycles. The enhanced performance of Si/CNF-P as an anode without a current collector and a binder in LIBs could be mainly attributed to the voids produced by cross-linked CNFs as a matrix and the electrochemical reaction of Si NPs on the CNFs without additional collapse of the electrode. 4. A 3D flexible Si-composite electrode consisting of core(Si)-shell(Si3N4) NPs and carbon nanofibers (Si-composite/CNF) was synthesized. The Si-composite/CNF was directly utilized as an anode in the absence of the other components. The Si-composite/CNF showed a high capacity at a fairly high current density of 10 A g-1 and an extremely low capacity loss for 2000 cycles.
