According to the National Survey of Population and Housing Census released by the National Statistical Office on September 7, 2016, the ratio of single person household last year was 27.2 percent, up 3.3 percentage points from 23.9 percent five years ago. This phenomenon is the result of the increase of the number of job applicant and diverse qualifications seeker as youngsters' employment got difficult, the increase of single men and women who want late or no marriage, the increase of divorce, the increase of the elderly living alone due to the aging society, and the increase of influx of foreign workers into Korea. The spread of such a single person household has led to the demand of small-sized densely residential space such as one-room and Goshiwon(small accomodation), and when the economic condition is not good, the low-priced residential type such as Jjokbang neighborhood(back rooms). The small-sized densely residential space where one person resides has a high risk of fire due to its structural characteristics and it is highly likely to cause personal injury in case of fire. These facts can be easily identified through fire cases. Therefore, this study tried to analyze the problems such as spatial form and structure, firefighting facilities and fire suppression conditions, and to present a plan of improvement to reduce fire risk based on the field survey with the small-sized densely residential space like Jjokbang(back room) in growing demand. The researcher visited Gosiwon and one room in Gwanak-gu and Dongjak-gu and Jjokbang neighborhood in Yeongdeungpo-gu where a lot of small-sized densely residential space are distributed in Seoul and carried out due diligence on small-sized densely residential facilities. The structure of building such as the form, scale, spatial composition and size of each room of the building was grasped, together with the investigation of the composition of occupants, the density of occupants and the usage patterns. The researcher confirmed the safety of firefighting and fire suppression including whether firefighting facilities are installed, security of back roads, vacant lot in the ground and distance from neighboring buildings. In addition, the thesis was conducted by analysis of fire risk and fire cause through fire cases of small-sized densely residential space and statistical analysis. Survey was conducted with the actual residents of Jjokbang(back room), Goshiwon(small accomodation), one-bedroom(studio), grasping the awareness of fire risk, reliability on fire-fighting facilities' operation in the building, the fire-fighting facilities considered necessary. Problems of small-sized densely residential facilities were derived based on the identification and investigation of on-site conditions through due diligence, fire cases and the statistical analysis and the investigation of occupants' awareness of fire risk. Alternatives to improve these problems were presented including application of firefighting facility for early detection and initial fire extinguishing, expansion of each indoor and outdoor alarm facility, security of the ease of evacuation to the outside of the building, security of performance of the fire protection compartment of each room, installation of smoking window in the public hallway (evacuation passage), strengthening of the block of illegal parking and standards to secure alleys through garage certificate for improvement of fire fighting activity. It is expected that the application of the above-mentioned improvement measures will reduce the risk of fire in increasing small-sized densely residential space. Especially, early detection and early warning are relatively easy to complement the other improvements, and seem to need to be applied preferentially as they are directly linked to safety of life. However, there are lots of practical difficulties such as cost problems and operational problems in applying these improvements in buildings currently in use. It is desirable that the support system for improving the fire safety performance, the improvement of owner's awareness and the necessity of investment should be recognized through this paper.
