With the strong increase in global population and the industrialization of developing country, the generation of scrap tires is increasing over 300,000 tons annually in South Korea. Since 2003, over 90 % of scrap tires have been regulated to be recycled according to the EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) legislation. Presently, the major ways of recycling of scrap tires in South Korea are the energy recovery and material collection. However, energy recovery has potentials to be harmful to atmospheric environments, and the material collection has a risk to contaminate soil environments by leaching out of heavy metals in the recycling process of tires. Because of these reasons, an effective and eco-friendly processing technique for scrap tires is urgent. Pyrolysis, one of thermochemical conversion processes, can convert scrap tires into valuable resources in inert conditions. It is considered as an eco-friendly waste treatment way by eliminating contaminants during the process. Pyrolysis produces gas, liquid, and solid products from scrap tires. The gas product having a high energy value is able to supply energy demanded for the pyrolysis process. Char, the solid product, has a high heating value and, hence, can be used as an alternative fuel as well. Char contains most carbon blacks used in the manufacturing process of tires; therefore, it has a high value as a recycled carbon black. In addition, char, after being converted into activated carbons by an activation process, can be introduced to a pollution handling process. The liquid product from scrap tires has similar properties to diesel fuels, so they are subjected to considerable attentions as an alternative fuel. Additionally, it contains considerable amounts of valuable chemical compounds such as DL-limonene. These chemical can be extracted and then used in the chemical industries. But applications of the pyrolysis products have a limitation due to high sulfur contents of the products, which were introduced mainly by the vulcanization process in the tire manufacturing. This study was aimed to produce value-added products and reduce sulfur contents of pyrolysis products from scrap tires. To achieve the research goals, char was converted into activated carbon by the one-step pyrolysis/activation process. To produce a low-sulfur liquid fuel, the pyrolysis of scrap tires was conducted using the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process. The main part of the process is the reaction zone composed of an auger reactor and a fluidized bed reactor in series. The auger reactor was expected mainly to remove sulfur compounds generated during pyrolysis, and the main pyrolysis reactions to occur in the fluidized bed reactor operated at higher temperatures than the auger reactor. In addition, a possibility was investigated to produce a pyrolysis liquid having high content of valuable chemicals such as DL-limonene and aromatics. The research contents of this work can be divided into 3 parts. The first part is pyrolysis of scrap tires in a fixed bed reactor and production of activated carbon using one-step pyrolysis/activation process. In this part, the yields and properties of pyrolysis products were explored according to the final pyrolysis temperatures ranging 500–800 °C. Immediately after pyrolysis, char remained in the reactor was activated using CO2 as an activating agent at the final activation temperature of 950 °C with activation time of 1–3 hr. After activation, the char could be converted into mesoporous activated carbon. In addition to pyrolysis/activation experiments, acid treatment of char using a HCl solution was conducted to remove metals and sulfur in the char. The activation of the acid treated char was also conducted to determine the effect of acid treatment on the pore development during activation process. As a result, increasing of the final pyrolysis temperature, the pyrolysis oil yields were decreased while the gas yields were increased. The yields of gas and pyrolysis oil were ~30–38 and ~23–30 wt.%, respectively. Char yields were relatively constant at ~37 wt.% in all experiments. Pyrolysis oils contained mainly DL-limonene, xylenes, methylstyrenes, trimethylbenzenes, dimethylstyrenes and dimethylindenes. An activated carbon having a high surface area (~437 m2/g) could be obtained from char formed at the final pyrolysis temperature of 500 °C through a physical activation at 950 °C for 3 hr. The acid treatment decreased ash and sulfur contents in chars, but it showed a negative effect in the pore development during activation process of chars. The second experimental part was to produce low-sulfur containing pyrolysis oils and chars. To achieve the goal, the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process was applied. The one-stage pyrolysis process, which consists of only a fluidized bed reactor, was also used for comparison. The one-stage pyrolysis was conducted at reaction temperatures of ~510 and ~610 °C with different fluidizing medium (N2 and gas product). The sulfur contents of the pyrolysis products were investigated at each experimental parameter. The two-stage pyrolysis was carried out in the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process varying the reaction temperatures (~230–450 °C) and sample residence time (~3–4.5 min) of an auger reactor. While, the reaction temperature of a fluidized bed reactor was kept ~510 °C. As a result, low-sulfur pyrolysis oils could be produced from the two-stage pyrolysis (0.90 wt.%: the one-stage pyrolysis → 0.53 wt.%: the two-stage pyrolysis). Besides, the liquid products from the auger reactor contained high a DL-limonene content up to 50 wt.%. The high level of DL-limonene in pyrolysis oil may contribute to economic benefits for the pyrolysis process of scrap tires. The final research part, additives which can absorb sulfur compounds produced during the scrap tire pyrolysis were applied in the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process to further reduce the sulfur contents of products. The reaction temperatures of the auger and fluidized bed reactors were maintained at ~335 and ~510 °C, respectively. Dolomite and olivine as fluidized bed materials and additives for sulfur compounds were used. Metal oxides of the minerals were expected to capture the sulfur compounds. In addition, FeO powder was injected into the pyrolysis process, being mixed with feed material, to increase sulfur reduction activity in the auger reactor. The N2 gas was used as the fluidized medium. As a result, the use of calcined olivine as the fluidized bed material led to the outstanding sulfur removal from pyrolysis products. The pyrolysis oils obtained contained a very low sulfur (~0.45 wt.%). In addition, the simultaneous application of N2 gas and FeO powder was effective for the production of a low-sulfur pyrolysis oil. The scrap tire pyrolysis using N2 gas, FeO powder and calcined olivine could produce a pyrolysis oil having only 0.39 wt.% of sulfur. The sulfur content of this research is the lowest one ever reported. In this research, the pyrolysis of scrap tires has been accomplished through a one-stage and two-stage pyrolysis process. In addition, activated carbons were economically produced from scrap tires. In particular, the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process could achieve significant results in the pyrolysis of scrap tires in aspect of producing low-sulfur containing pyrolysis oil. It presented a new desulfurization way different from previous studies which mainly applied in-situ desulfurization method using catalysts. Also, the UOS two-stage pyrolysis process appeared to have great potentials for the pyrolysis of other wastes having heteroatoms such as PVC and Waste Electric and Electronic Equipment by providing a method to in-situ remove heteroatom-containing compounds.
