Rapid evacuation in indoor spaces have become an important issue as social concerns about safety have increased. Most applications or studies are devoted to computing shortest paths from a location to exits and only a few aim to minimize the total evacuation time. The total evacuation time means the time when the entire occupants in the building complete evacuation. So the problem of minimizing total evacuation time is directly related to the minimization of human casualties and is very important issue in the field of indoor evacuation. However, most studies for minimizing total evacuation time do not take into account aspects of realistic evacuation guidance because they focus on minimizing evacuation time arithmetically. The optimal evacuation routes generated from these models has limitations in applying to actual evacuation guidance. For this reason, this study proposes a space allocation strategy that minimizes total evacuation time considering evacuation guidance aspect. In the mentioned study, occupants in one space can be divided and move to different exits in order to minimize the evacuation time. However, in an emergency situation, it is practically difficult to guide people in a space to different directions, and may confuse them significantly. For this reason, the proposed method uses the space allocation strategy that guide the occupants in one space to the same exit. The proposed space allocation strategy is based on graph theory. The spaces where the occupants can stay such as rooms and lobbies are represented by nodes, and the hallways used to connect the nodes are represented by edges. Each node contains the number of occupations and the edge includes the time taken to move between nodes. Finally, each node is assigned an exit, occupants of which are to move to. That is, the proposed space allocation strategy computes a process of exits assignment of the nodes, leading to the division of the spaces based on the exits. The strategy uses a greedy algorithm for minimizing total evacuation time. Each exit competitively absorbs nodes, repeating until evacuation times of exits are balanced and the total evacuation time is minimized. It is a heuristic approach because it repeatedly adjusts the nodes assigned to exits until it reaches a near optimization. In order to verify the proposed strategy, the study performs convergence judgment tests and comparisons with existing evacuation models for various occupants distribution cases in the same building model. In the convergence test, this study checks whether the convergence according to the initial value and the node allocation order in order to determine whether the solution calculated from the model converges to the global optimal solution. In the comparison test, results of EVACNET4, a well-known evacuation model, and that of the space allocation model are compared and analyzed using a Cellular Automata based evacuation simulator called EgresSIM.
