Recently, safety issued have been constantly being raised due to increased industrial safety accidents. Nondestructive testing is a key technology for the diagnosis and maintenance of materials, products, and equipment structure in the industrial field, and extension of the life span. In recent years, the infrared inspection method has attracted a great deal of attention due to its capability of inspecting a large area in a short time in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. In this paper, investigated the defect size detection using infrared thermography and improved the reliability by calculating the uncertainty. Finite element analysis model was developed and uncertainty measurement was carried out. The excitation frequency using the halogen lamp heat source was reduced from 0.1 Hz to 0.01 Hz. The 4-point method was applied to experimental thermal images to acquired the amplitude and phase images by using MATLAB programme. Amplitude images provided better resolution for defect detection than phase images. The FEA model using ANSYS 15.0 showed a similar trend to the experimental results, but the values were slightly different. The defect size measurement from the amplitude image was done by using MATLAB. And then the uncertainty analysis was carried out. As a result, the correlation between frequency and temperature was done for the detection and measurement of defect size. It is found that the lock-in thermography technique showed good reliability for relatively large defects.
