The purpose of this study was to estimate the amount of beverage consumption and caloric intake from beverage intake in 10~18 year-old children and adolescent on the Fifth and Sixth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES Ⅴ and Ⅵ), 2010-2014. Three thousand seven hundred thirty-two children and adolescents in KNHANES V and VI were involved in this study. Also, database from KNHANES I (1998), III (2005), IV (2009), and VI (2014) were analyzed to determine beverage consumption trends by years in Korean children and adolescents. Beverages were categorized into five groups; fruit and vegetable juices, carbonated drinks, milk and liquid milk products, alcoholics, and other beverages. The mean carbonated beverage total amount intake subjects was 371.56 ± 9.26 mL. Milk and liquid milk products beverages was intake subjects by 2,067 children and adolescents in this study. The mean liquid milk products beverage total amount intake subjects was 303.77 ± 4.67 mL. Consumption of carbonated drinks in boys was significantly higher than in girls (p<0.001). The subjects aged 16~18 years had significantly higher carbonated beverage intake than other age groups. However milk and liquid milk products intake of the adolescents aged 16~18 years was significant lower. There was no significantly difference in alcohol consumption by sex. However, alcohol consumption was significantly higher in 16~18-year-old adolescents. Milk and liquid milk products consumption was significantly higher in the medium-high and high house income levels than other levels. No differences in all beverages observed by body mass index category and by residence status (p≥0.05). The consumptions of carbonated drinks and other beverages have increased by years and the consumptions in 2014 was significantly higher than other years. However, milk and liquid milk products consumption was not changed by years. Energy intake from carbonated drinks increased yearly in both boys and girls, and the energy intake was highest in 2014. Boys consumed more energy form alcoholics than did girls. The results of this study will provide a basic information for nutrition education regarding beverage consumption in Korean children and adolescents.
