Electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs) are energy storage devices that have fast charge-discharge rates, high power density and longer life cycles than secondary batteries. The most important factor affecting the performance of EDLC is activated carbon used as an electrode material. Generally, the higher the specific surface area of activated carbon, the higher the capacitance. Volumetric capacitance (F/cc) is more important than gravimetric capacitance (F/g) in order to reduce the size of EDLCs. When activated carbon having high specific surface area is used as the electrode material, the gravimetric capacitance is high, but the volumetric capacitance is low due to the low electrode density. In order to overcome this problem, we have studied the fabrication of EDLC electrode material having high volumetric capacitance by increasing electrode density. In order to make high density activated carbon for EDLC, coal tar pitch (CTP) was used as raw material and K2CO3, a mild activation agent, was used for activation. Experiments were carried out by changing the ratio of activation agent, and the activation temperature and time to investigate the optimal activation conditions. The coal tar pitch was stabilized at a temperature of 300℃ in air atmosphere for 2 hours. The ratios of CTP to activation agent were varied from 1:1 to 1:6, the activation temperatures were varied from 800 to 1000℃, and the activation times varied from 1 to 7 hours. The highest capacitance was obtained when the ratio of CTP to K2CO3 was 1:2, and decreased when the ratio was more than 1:2. As the activation temperature and time increased, the capacitance increased. The activation temperature was more sensitive than the activation time. The K2CO3 activated CTP at 1000℃ for 3 hours had the highest specific surface area (1489 m2/g), highest gravimetric (21.8 F/g), and volumetric capacitance (17.4 F/cc). The specific surface area of commercial activated carbon (MSP-20) was 2277 m2/g, and it’s gravimetric and volumetric capacitances were 25.0 F/g and 18.5 F/cc, respectively. In spite of much the lower specific surface area, the volumetric capacitance of the K2CO3 activated CTP was comparable to that of MSP-20. The specific surface area of the K2CO3 activated CTP was lower than half of the KOH activated CTP and it’s gravimetric capacitance was also lower showing 72% of the KOH activated CTP. However, it’s volumetric capacitance was about 91% of the KOH activated CTP. The CTP and petroleum pitch (PP) carbonized for 1 hour at 500∼1000℃ in nitrogen atmosphere were used as the electrode material of EDLC after KOH activation. As the carbonization temperature increased, specific surface area, pore volume and gravimetric capacitance decreased, but crystallinity and yield increased. Therefore, it was possible to control the crystalline structure, specific surface area and pore structure of activated carbon by changing the pre-carbonization temperature. Since the electrode density also increased with increasing the pre-carbonization temperature, the highest volumetric capacitances of 23.1 F/cc for CTP was obtained at 800℃ and of 28.4 F/cc for PP was obtained at 700℃, respectively, exhibiting 140% and 150% of commercial activated carbon (MSP-20). The specific surface area and pore volume of PP showed higher values than CTP, which is expected to be due to the higher aliphatic content and the narrower molecular weight distribution of PP. The electrochemical activation was observed from the electrodes for which CTP and PP were pre-carbonized at high temperatures above 700℃ and then activated by KOH. This process was found to have a significant effect on the high capacitance in spite of the low specific surface area, and it was analyzed that the higher charging voltage of EDLC, the greater the effect by electrochemical activation.
