Every human being is born with the sense of art; therefore, everyone has
desire to create something instinctively. Art is an activity through which
people portray their experiences, feelings-which they gained with their
sense organs, and their notions by employing external medium.
We can figure out the mental state and the stages of development of
pupils with their art works, and this is the only form of education.
Moreover, the inner side of pupils is displayed through their expressive art
activities; therefore, this makes it possible to have an in-depth
understanding of the pupils. The primary goal of art education for children
is not to learn how to draw picture well and create amazing pieces of art
works but to develop and activate various senses. Art has a significant
impact on developing one’s character, thus, it is crucial to devise and have
the appropriate art educations for the character development of pupils.
In the process of the growth, children go through the several developments
in various aspects: physical development, cognitive development, linguistic
development, development of the emotion, and development of social skills.
Thus, the educational goals for children are the holistic development, both
physical and mental health as well as happiness. Art is one of the
representative activities. For brain, expression through art is important
during childhood. Intelligence Quotient (IQ) had been considered as an
important factor to determine the improvement of academic ability,
occupational success; however, now that Emotional Quotient (EQ) is
currently prioritized, the educational system is designed for children to
develop EQ with various methods.
The meanings of the art education, which have the pupils use their brain,
are as follows. First, art activities stimulate the senses: sense of vision,
auditory sense, olfactory sense, palate, tactile sensation; and this is
delivered to the neurons in the brain and activates them. As a result, this
helps the development of left brain and right brain.
Second, the brain continuously seeks the stimulation and a new experience.
We can take curiosity among natural characteristics of humans as an
example. Curiosity is developed to activate the brain more, and the art
helps gratify one’s curiosity by engaging the person in creating pieces with
various colors, materials and providing the environment where one can feel
relieved and be spontaneous. Third, the pupils creates new senses by
delivering the information and experiences, they glean from the art
activities, to their brains. For children, art activities through play is as
significant as the various experiences in art. Through ‘play’, pupils act
voluntarily and from the environment in which they establish a bond with
their peers, this results in intellectual development. The education to
activate brain during childhood should be considered important. Since the
synapse and neural circuits in brains are radically changed during
childhood, it is essential to provide various educational programs and
environments to the children.
Art activities help the children to find their talents and raise their
awareness, and they also give the pupils to spatially and visually express
their feelings, notions-that they gained from their experiences- with
external media
The author plans to carry out the study on the instructional models of a
clay plastic art activity for the children art education.
Because of a lot of environmental limitations, educators do not prefer the
clay plastic art activity; however, most of pupils love the activities.
Through the clay plastic art activity, the students will express their
feelings and thoughts with various means while drawing and crafting; this
aims to foster emotions, capability of expressing oneself and develop the
ability to think as well as the brain by intriguing them, bringing them an
insight in art and maximizing their pleasure from the art activity.
Chaptr Ⅱ is to give an overview about "Children Art." by reviewing the
concept and characteristics briefly. Chapter Ⅲ is to explore the concept &
the charactenristics of three dimensional design in children art education as
well as the materials used for the plastic art. chapter Ⅳ is to deal with
the educational significance of the day plastic art course for the children
art and the influence on the pupils; the subject, the method of the study
and the instructional approach were determined; also, the teachingplan was
prepared and applied on this chapter.
The process of the activities was analyzed, and the goal was to study the
way of activating the art education and expected effects of the clay plastic
art activities. This study referred to Taejin Yeom’s the artistic
development of the stereoscopic expression and Golomb’s the artistic
development of the stereoscopic expression. The subject of the study was
pupils, ranged in age from 4 to 8. The types of the clay used are clay,
paper clay, color clay mixed with paints.
The class was conducted based on three processes: the exploration with
clay, the expression of the composition and the free activity. Pupils’
experiences, sensation- gained after completing their artwork-and behavior
through the class were observed for analysis.
The study focuses on improving the educational value of the clay plastic
art education by finding the expected effects of the clay plastic art activity
and the way of activating the art education.
