Simulation of Extreme Hydrological Scenarios of Unconfined Aquifer with FEFLOW in the Lower Valley of Var River : Var강 하류지역 지하수 흐름의 FEFLOW 모델을 이용한 불압대수층의 극한 수문학적 시나리오 분석원문보기

With increases in the world’s population and ever changing climates, rapid weather changes and unpredictable situations have become more common occurrences. The frequency of extreme hydrological events such as floods and droughts has also increased. As a result, the use of groundwater will continue to increase. Since groundwater is continuously being used to supply irrigation and drinking water in many dry areas around the world, basic groundwater levels are decreasing. The Var river, which is located in the Côte d'Azur region on the French southeast coast, supplies drinking water to 600,000 citizens. Due to a close relation between unconfined aquifers and rivers, groundwater is significantly affected by hydrological conditions, which trigger a rapid reaction of the groundwater flow under the circulation of extreme hydrological events such as floods and droughts. It is therefore required to know exactly how the water resources from the lower valley of the Var river will change due to extreme hydrological events, and what actions are to be taken in response to the change. The quantitative results of extreme hydrological events and aquifer actions should be derived using a proven hydraulic model to better understand them. In this study, the scenarios of floods and droughts were analyzed through Gumbel and Log-normal distribution. With the use of a MIKE 11 model, the discharge of the lower valley of the Var river was calculated, and the groundwater flow was analyzed using a FEFLOW model with the discharge according to the results of the MIKE 11. The analysis found that changes in the water level and patterns of the groundwater level changes are quite similar to each other during floods. However, the change patterns become different downstream during a drought. In this study, a prediction of extreme events was not presented, but changes in groundwater levels can be predicted. It is expected that the results of this study will be used as important data for establishing both preventive planning and groundwater management before such extreme events occur in the lower valley of the Var River.
