Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are one of the most important and interesting issues in automotive industry and research fields. In the ADAS system, vision-based approaches by leveraging various computer vision techniques have been considered as promising solutions. Since a number of imaging data can provide an understanding for higher-level driving assistance, many applications in the ADAS have been formulated as the vision-based approaches. Even though they require a number of scene understanding approaches for their algorithms, most of them are typically based on lane detection or obstacle detection, which can be considered as the core algorithms for the vision-based ADAS system. In those tasks, these detection algorithms have inherent shortcomings against various illumination conditions. In this dissertation, we discuss the illumination robust lane and obstacle detection. First of all, vision-based lane detection algorithms are generally using color information to describe a lane feature. However, they are sensitive to varying illuminations and also exhibit high computational complexities. To alleviate these limitations, we propose a real-time and illumination robust lane detection method for lane departure warning system. The proposed method works well even in various illumination conditions such as at bad weather and night conditions. It can be formulated as three major components. First, we detect a vanishing point based on a voting map, and define an adaptive region of interest (ROI) to reduce a computational complexity. Second, we utilize the distinct property of lane colors to achieve illumination invariant lane marker candidate detection. Finally, we find the major lane using a clustering method from the lane marker candidates. For a lane departure application, our system can send reliable driver alarm signal. Experimental results show satisfactory performance under various illumination conditions. Secondly, stereo vision is the most important part in many recent vision-based obstacle detection algorithms. It is because they can provide disparity for obstacles. In this regard, disparity is a useful feature for detecting reliable obstacles, but it simultaneously may result in incorrect information due to its inherent limitations. Specifically, homogenous regions of dimness and noise cause disparity errors. Furthermore, disparity estimation needs high computational complexities. To alleviate these limitations, we present hierarchical census transform based cost measures in stereo matching for vision based ADAS. The proposed method uses a hierarchical approach to highly improve computational efficiency and reduce dependency on a matching window size. Computational complexity can also be accelerated through a unified device architecture (CUDA) implementation, where we designed the proposed method for parallel processing. Moreover, we provide robustness against illumination variations and noises from various real circumstances with an efficient computational scheme. In contrast to the conventional approaches, we focus on efficiently formulating the obstacle detection by leveraging an obstacle candidate region detection and hierarchical distribution map. Specifically, our approach consists of three parts. First, we perform HCT-based stereo matching only in this region for real-time obstacle candidate detection. Second, the obstacle block is found from the estimated distribution map, and then detected from the extracted valid blocks. Finally, with a labeling scheme, the obstacle is detected. The proposed method performs conventional methods in terms of runtime and accuracy of depth estimation. To summarize, in this dissertation, we present real-time illumination robust lane and obstacle detection algorithm for vision-based ADAS under various illumination conditions, and they definitely outperform conventional detection methods under a variety of circumstances.
