The purpose of this study is to identify relationships among character strength of elementary school students, their peer relationships and subjective well-being. This study is also to examine the mediating effect of peer relationships on character strength of elementary school student and their subjective well-being.
For this purpose, four elementary schools situated in Seoul were selected and a total of 600 copies of questionnaires were distributed to the fifth and sixth graders, both male and female, in those selected schools. Among those 600 copies of questionnaires, 555 copies proven valid were used for data analysis. In this study, a translated version of simplified index of character strengths presented in the VIA-Youth by Seligman (2002) in order to measure each representative character strength by Moon Yong-lin, Kim In-ja, Won Hyun-joo, Baek Soo-hyun, Ahn Sun-young (2009) was used to identify character strengths of elementary school students. In addition, a translated version of IPPA-R: The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment-Revised by Hwang Sook-young (2006) was used to measure the agreeableness of elementary students participated in the survey in their peer relations. As for the index of subjective well-being, a translated version of the Index of Well-being developed by Campbell (1976) by Han Jung-won (1997) was used to collect the data. Valid data were analyzed using SAS 9.3 and Mplus 7 program.
The main results of this study are as follows: First, the result of the analysis on the correlations among character strengths of elementary students, their peer relationships and subjective well-being shows that there is a positive correlation between the character strengths of elementary school students and their peer relationships and that there is also a meaningful positive correlation between character strengths, peer relations, and subjective well-being. Such results indicate that the higher the score of character strengths on a scale, the more harmonious peer relationships the students build with their classmates, thereby increasing their subjective well-being. As such, what the result of the survey means is that in order to enhance the subjective well-being of elementary school students, it is necessary to pay more keen attention and help them further develop their own character strengths and tap into them. Second, the examination of mediating effects of peer relationships on their character strengths and subjective well-being found that the character strengths influence students' subjective well-being directly and indirectly. That is, while the character strengths directly affect the subjective well-being of elementary school students, they also influence their subjective well-being in a more indirect manner through the mediating effects of their peer relationships. As students have stronger character strengths, they enhance their subjective well-being through developing higher agreeableness in their peer relationships, which lead them to have more positive social support. Therefore, the study found that peer relationships of elementary school students play a partial mediating role in the relation between character strengths and subjective well-being.
To summarize the results of this study, character strengths and peer relationships of elementary school students are significant factors which can influence their subjective well-being. This study will be able to be utilized as basic data for the research aimed at better understanding of and improving subjective well-being of elementary school students. In other words, this study can provide a useful material for student counseling and education for the improvement of subjective well-being of elementary school students both at home and school. Lastly, this study has its values when it contributes to the healthy development and sound growth of elementary school students by letting them enhance their own character strengths and helping them build positive peer relationships so that they can improve their subjective well-being.
