The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of the English word journal writing activity on elementary school learners’vocabulary and the affective domain. For that purpose, experimental class were carried out for 18 weeks from a class in the 5th grade. The used research tools included pre- and post-tests for elementary school English vocabulary and the affective domain, a post-class questionnaire, a teaching journal, learning journals, data from learner interviews etc. The results of the study can be summarized as follow. First, the English word journal writing activity via the mind map strategy had positive effects on the learners’ English vocabulary development. This result is believed to be due to the fact that the learners were equipped with a desirable system of basic words by their use of the mind map strategy, and indirect materials like pictures helped their long-term memory of words. Second, the class model in this study turned out to have positive effects on the component of interestingness, an affective domain. This suggests that the learners’experience in the course different from other word lexical learning strategies, in which they delineated basic words in a mind map at the time of the introduction of a unit, was helpful for increase in the affective domain for English. Based on the results so far, we make the following suggestions for elementary school English vocabulary teaching. First, a series of work is necessary in which the existing textbook’s activity steps are reconstructed to directly create teaching-learning plans and activity materials if the class model of this study is to be applied to regular English classes. The mind map strategy, among others, should be applied in consideration of an appropriate method to determine what levels learners are at. Second, though the class model of this study is in a form in which smaller sub-themes branch out from the title of each unit in the textbook as a basic framework when the theme of the mind map is determined, better effects are expected in future application of the model if various forms of mind maps are constructed with unit-related key words as well as unit titles. Lastly, viewpoints of elementary school English vocabulary teaching need changes, and teachers at scenes should be engaged in exploration to help their students to be more easily acquainted with English vocabulary. Effects of vocabulary learning will turn out to be positive for every learner only when vocabulary learning is enjoyed happily in various ways rather than through unconditional memorizing.
