This study developed the art-therapy-based STEAM Career・Vocational Education Program and verified its effectiveness to improve majoring course Students with Intellectual Disabilities in Special Schools. To develop the STEAM Career・Vocational Education Program, a survey was distributed to special school majoring course teachers with the exception of those working at schools for the visually and aurally challenged from April 13th through 29th, 2016; the survey was designed to ask questions on the objectives of career/vocational education, education process, and the STEAM Career・Vocational Education Program. A total of 740 surveys were distributed and of those, 589 copies were collected and used for analysis. Upon conducting the frequency analysis and a technical statistical analysis, it was found that vocational readiness is considered the most important factor in designing the objective and process of Career・Vocational Education. The analysis also showed the ranks 1 through 4 that the respondents assigned to the units that are taught with emphasis for each career, vocation, and area. Furthermore, the respondents expressed that they expect the STEAM Career ・ Vocational Education Program will help the students with intellectual disabilities to better prepare their careers and that they consider the program to be necessary. Based on the survey, the STEAM Career・Vocational Education Program was constructed by referencing to various writings and preceding research data. To develop the program: first, priority units for each section of the careers and vocations in the basic curriculum of Special Schools were selected; second, the textbooks and sub-units of the STEAM-related special education basic curriculum were analyzed; third, the treatment factors of art therapy and methods that can improve vocational readiness, i.e., daily living skills, cognitive skills, self-esteem, social skills, and work ethic and skills, were selected, and the art-media process was reflected in the program. Through these steps, the STEAM Career ・ Vocational Education Program was developed; it was further corrected and complemented by three experts' verification of its suitability. Next was the verification of the program's effectiveness on improving the special school majoring course and the vocational readiness of the students with intellectual disabilities. The experimental group and the comparative group were each formed with 19 members of special school majoring course and intellectually-challenged students from N and M cities; from August 29th through October 5th, 2016, the verification process was conducted over a total of 17 sessions, each of which consisted of 51 50-minute sub-sessions. Vocational Readiness Test (Daegu Rehabilitation Center, 2006) was used for the verification. The repeated measures analysis of variance was used to identify differences between the two groups. The results showed that the test period, and the interaction between the test period and the two test groups were statistically significant. All of the sub-factors (daily living skills, self-esteem, social skills, and work ethic and skills), except for the cognitive skills experienced statistically significant effects. These results show that the STEAM Career・Vocational Education Program is effective for improving special school majoring course and the vocational readiness of those with intellectual disabilities.
