The objective of this study is to propose an outline of performing a hermeneutic approach from beginning a review of rough and tumble play getting out of the conventional empirical science theory and to verify the modern concept of the rough and tumble play as a semantic level. Therefore, this study investigates the meaning of rough and tumble play presented in the Yeulmae-classroom for five-years-old children. The research question of this study is set as follows.
Research question: What is the meaning of rough and tumble play in the Yeulmae-classroom for five-years-old children? For implementing this study, a total of 35 participant observations, two or three times a week, were performed for the subjects of 25 teachers and children engaged in the Yeulmae-classroom (a pseudonym) of the Saessak preschool (a pseudonym) located in Asan City, Chungcheong Province from March 21 to July 25, 2016. In addition, interviews and documents were collected to fully understand and search the case. Also, different methods of recording sites, videos, and audios were used to accurately record and collect the data. The researcher of this study made strenuous efforts to identify the implied meaning in the data through continuous considerations and systematization processes in a data collection process. The video and audio data, photos, and site recording data were also integrated to make an observation note on the day or tomorrow. The final observation note was documented by a total of 290 pages, and the interview and document records were 23 and 197 pages respectively. During the examination of the data, some meaningful words, behaviors, types, and events were underlined and a 'preliminary category list' was made according to the research question of this study (Bogdan & Biklen, 2007). In the initial stage of the examination, the children who enjoyed the play, what are the behaviors and playing methods in the play, and what are the frequently appeared virtual situations were analyzed based on the behaviors of the rough and tumble play in their days. Then, based on the situations of rough and tumble play, both the interactions between children and teachers and the responses of children were analyzed. A category list was made through a reorganization process by repeating the category and some proper contents were collected for the category. The categories and contents were examined repeatedly. Then, the cases presented in this study were demonstrated, analyzed, and described. In addition, the member review (Merriam, 1998) on the analyzed results was performed by the teachers of the Yeulmae-classroom in order to correct and complement the results through reducing the errors in the analysis and examination processes.
The meanings of the experience of rough and tumble play in the Yeulmae-classroom for five-years-old children are as follows.
The rough and tumble play in the Yeulmae-classroom for five-years-old children was classified into seven different categories such as having fun and thrill enjoying, power struggling, 'Go' and 'Stop' play, expanding games with creation and modification, play with rebuilding a space, 'noisy' in free time, and having fun avoiding teachers' attentions and these categories were analyzed by two or three cases, which include phenomenological characteristics for each category. First, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom enjoyed their plays with loud laugh and rough motions. Laugh-exciting-rough and tumble plays were integrated as a single 'playground'. The pleasure presented from the rough and tumble play was expressed as 'laugh' and the pleasure was also increased as the play was getting into full swing. Also, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom searched, felt, and enjoyed the nature while they enjoyed thrills outdoors such as running steep declension fast and jumping down from high rocks. However, the children were restrained as long as they were discovered by their teachers. Second, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom showed off their strength through rough and tumble play such as holding a friend up and having a hand wrestling. Also, they enjoyed power struggling through playing a character from a storybook. The boys in the Yeulmae-classroom played themselves as some superpowered characters, such as shark, lion, monster, power ranger, spider man, and so on. Also, they fabricated guns or bombs to showing off their power. The power struggling was appeared as laying on to be virtual fight instead of 'actual' power struggling. Third, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom used the 'Go' and 'Stop' mechanism (MacDonald, 1992) harmonically. That is, they controlled the strength of motions and emotions by themselves and enjoyed the rough and tumble play. The children enjoyed the rough and tumble play by controlling their power levels that are accepted by their opponents. 'Do not harm other friends' is a tacit 'agreement' in the rough and tumble play and the agreement was reflected to the play. In the same context, different rough and tumble plays were presented as just 'go through the motions' instead of implementing actual hitting, kicking, and physical contacts. In addition, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom made some rules in the play such as 'Do not apply actual motions', 'Do not make others sick', 'Doing it safely', 'Walk quietly', and etc., in order for safely doing the play. Fourth, in the children in the Yeulmae-classroom there were 'creation' and 'modification' as the children enjoyed themselves to the full in the play and were emerged into the play. They made efforts of creating some powerful things break away from their 'limitations' while they enjoyed struggle plays. In that process, they build a new dynamic 'playground' by creating new entertainments and by modifying their rules. A simple cat-and-mouse game was modified as different new plays in which a tagger cannot catch an opponent as the opponent is attached to a wall and a tagger cannot hold an opponent as the opponent yells as 'Ice!'. In addition, the game was changed as a character game that a player is changed as a superpowered character. The entertainment tools fabricated by the children were getting stronger through breaking and reassembling processes of the tools and some powers and functions were added to the tools. They enjoyed the rough and tumble play by modifying and expanding their entertainments. Fifth, the children in the Yeulmae-classroom enjoyed the rough and tumble play by destroying the space limitations determined by their teachers and through rebuilding the space. The entire space of the classroom was changed as a hurdle ground and was modified as a 'battleground' for the boys. As the children in the Yeulmae-classroom finished their block stacking games, they moved to language and numbering regions, which are relatively inactive regions, in order to enjoy the rough and tumble play such as plays at cops and soldiers. Also, as children were densely populated at a specific region, they moved to other empty spaces and enjoyed rough and tumble play like slipping down with knees. In addition, the children enjoyed rough and tumble play, a type of tag games, such as running with large motions, cat-and-mouse, freeze tag, and 'The rose of sharon is blooming' outdoors . Also, during these games they frequently yelled in a loud voice and laughed out loud. Sixth, although there were lots of rough and tumble plays both in the indoor free choice activity time and in the outdoor activity time in the Yeulmae-classroom, they enjoyed different rough and tumble plays at some free time including transition time in straight lines, lunchbox distribution time, and prep materials distribution time for large and small group activities. However, as the rough and tumble plays performed in this free time represented 'rowdiness' and 'disorder', the play was usually finished in a short period of time or controlled by teachers. Seventh, most of rough and tumble plays in the classroom including 'Hey, there is a teacher on his or her way!', 'Hey, ○○∼’, 'What are you doing now?, 'Hey, kids~', and 'What happened at this time?' were directly controlled and finished by teachers. While the children enjoyed the rough and tumble play, they were sensitive about teachers' attitudes and performed the play under the tables.
