This study was conducted to eating behavior and nutritional status of 700 females in their twenties, living in Seoul. After categorizing the subjects into four groups according to their BMI, the study analyzed and compared information and relevant data of the subjects. Anthropometric assesment and body composition analysis of the subjects were performed, and surveyed them to gather data about general information, eating habits, and eating behaviors. Using the Stunkard figure rating scale, their current body shape, and the ideal body shape were examined, and the degree of body distortion and their body dissatisfaction were studied. Through Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire, eating behavior was assessed by restrained eating, emotional eating, and external eating scales. Furthermore, 24-hour recall method was utilized to study nutritional status and the percentage of recommended consumption and nutrient adequacy ratio were compared. A total number of 656 subjects were enrolled in the study. Of the total, 147 belonged to underweight group, 317 were included in normal weight group and 57 were in overweight group and 147 were categorized into obesity group; the average age of the subjects was 22.2. Anthropometric assessment showed that body weight, body mass index, and fat distribution based on levels of obesity were different among subjects(p<0.001). Research of weight control experience and body image perception indicates that subjects in underweight and normal weight groups often perceived their body size normal or overweight. This distortion of body image often made them attempt to lose body weight. Also, the body shape dissatisfaction level turned to be higher as the body mass index increased (p<0.001). Diet-related problems including irregular eating, breakfast skipping, late-night eating and unbalanced diet were detected in all subjects. Especially participants in obesity groups showed significantly different in meal size(P <0.01), time of meal consumption(p <0.05) and frequency of overeating(P <0.01) compared to others. When analyzed by BMI, subjects showed differences in eating behaviors such as depression caused by food consumption and overeating; and the influence of negative emotions on food consumption(p<0.001). The obese group had higher abstinence and emotional eating behavior than other groups when they were assessed by DEBQ(p <0.001). The obesity group showed more frequent dietary restraint and emotional eating than other groups. Restrained eating and calorie intake showed negative correlation (r=-.183, p<0.001) and external eating and calorie intake showed positive correlation (r=.174, p<0.001). It indicates that there is a corelation between eating behavior and food consumption. Analysis of nutritious status showed the amount of protein intake was different among subjects with various obesity levels. Calories, dietary fiber, vitamin C, folic acid, calcium, potassium and zinc were less consumed than recommended. The mean adequacy ratio was 0.63 and overall nutritional status was not adequate. Among the examples of BMI and eating behavior, restrained eating(r=.254, p<0.001), emotional eating(r=.228, p<0.001) and external eating (r=.094, p<0.05) showed a significant corelation. External eating patterns were revealed to have the strongest relation with calorie (r=.174, p <0.001), protein (r=.167, p<0.001) and phosphorus (r=.146, p <0.001) intake amount. A positive correlation was also identified among BMI, distortion of body images(r=.679, p<0.001) and body dissatisfaction(r=.985, p<0.001) which demonstrates a strong relevancy among eating behavior and obesity-level-related variables. The research found significant distinction between eating behavior and nutrition intake based on female subjects' levels of obesity. Major nutrients which are necessary for health of females in child-bearing ages was not appropriately consumed. Subjects with a higher level of BMI tended to show a higher level of body image distortion and dissatisfaction. The data from the research can be further utilized as baseline data to develop nutrition education programs for young females in their twenties to have a better eating behavior.
