This dissertation explores how gender-sensitive sexuality education is practiced in school and the possibility of gender-sensitive sexuality education as an alternative to biological, essentialist, gender-blind sexuality education. Qualitative case study method was used to listen to the voices of four school sexuality education instructors and to understand their experiences deeply. Three research questions regarding the purpose of the study are as follows: first, how did research participants begin to be interested in gender-sensitive sexuality education and how do they understand the concept of gender-sensitive sexuality education? Second, how do research participants practice gender-sensitive sexuality education in school? Third, what hinders or promotes gender-sensitive sexuality education in school? Major findings indicate that the way of practicing and understanding gender-sensitive sexuality in school is deeply related with the life of the research participants. One of the important features that motivated their teaching sexuality education was the fact that they were born and raised as women. Throughout their lives, the four sexuality education instructors confronted numerous obstacles and oppressions that were originated from misogyny and gender-blindness. After they learned about feminism, they began to feel free from the male-centered patriarchal power relations and finally understood those oppressive experiences. Research participants argued that youth sexuality education should be practiced based on gender-sensitive perspective and feminist pedagogy in order to make more democratic and gender-equal society. After being informed by the school health teacher about the content areas that are needed to be included in the class curriculum, research participants focused on creating curriculum materials and developing teaching methods that suit gender-sensitive sexuality education. Some of them constructed a study group to share teaching methods and give feedbacks with other sexuality education instructors. Also, they tried to apply ‘experience-based education’ in classes, encouraging students to share their experiences related to gender inequality, misogyny and oppression of sexuality as teenagers. Even though the class evaluation was not done regularly, the research participants listened carefully to the response of each student or other teachers after class and attempted to reflect these feedbacks for their next classes. On the one hand, there seemed to be several hindrances to run gender-sensitive sexuality education in school. First, the class time allocated to sexuality education class was insufficient to cover diverse topics related to gender, sexuality, and sex. Since school sexuality education instructors were considered as part-time workers, not as full-time teachers, they also suffered from lack of salary. Moreover, due to the gender-blindness of the school teachers, research participants were sometimes forced to follow the 'school sex education guideline' published by the Ministry of Education which was repleted with misogynic and gender-blind information and metaphors. On the other hand, in-depth interviews showed that institutional support including financial support would help run quality school sexuality education class and stimulate sexuality education instructors' professional growth. In addition, research participants argued that the school teachers and related agents who are gender-blinded need to attend special education program. In conclusion, major findings indicate that the way of practicing and understanding gender-sensitive sexuality is deeply related with the life of the research participants. One of the important features that motivated teaching gender-sensitive sexuality education was the fact they were born and raised as women. Throughout their lives, these sexuality education instructors confronted numerous obstacles and oppressions that were originated from misogyny and gender-blindness. Due to the training program of the three agencies (i.e., Sexuality Center for Youth, Women’s associations, and Gender Equality Center) and the effort of each research participant, they began to re-interpret their thoughts and experiences through the feminist lens. Also, the interviews revealed that provisions from the agencies as well as feedbacks from school faculties and advices from colleagues would further promote gender-sensitive sexuality education in schools.
