This paper is aimed at examining the mentally disabled who, as the main agents, have researched their own illnesses with the fellow patients and sought for the ways for mutual help. The mentally disabled have so far been deprived of the self-determinative rights in terms of their own treatment under the system of mental health services where the expert-centered medical interventions such as medication and hospitalization dominate, and during this process the mentally handicapped themselves have had to feel helpless. This study, however, has succeeded in uncovering what experiences the participants had in the relationship with other fellows and what changes they underwent in the awareness of their own problems. This thesis is the analysis and organization of the results from two years of engaging in the study by the mentally disabled patients and its consideration to see how this kind of study, initiated in Japan, actually takes place in the mental health scenes in Korea. The first year was committed to the participation in the study by the mentally disabled and the observation of how it evolved; the second year was devoted to conducting the study in person and examining the changes in the relationship among the participants and the changes in the awareness of their problems. Then, the in-depth analysis based on the materials collected from this study and the interview data of thirteen participants made it successful in figuring out the essence of the participating patients' direct experiences. The result from the personal participation in the study by the disabled patients is that they began to talk about their own experiences regarding mental disorder that couldn't have been told in the past due to the negative awareness of their illness and repressive control; and they felt an emotional support from the sympathy among the participants who were in the similar situations. As a result, their relationship that had been once superficial was turning into that of comrades who can communicate and help one another by sharing and understanding their difficulties that led to self-understanding in the process of understanding the others. In addition, the study by the mentally disabled themselves made a change not only in the recognition of their own problems but in their practical attitudes. Before participating in this study, they mostly relied only on the medication, but now they came to realize mental diseases are the matters that can be solved by their own will and the others' assistance, that is to say the daily challenge they should manage. Besides, learning from the other fellows' experiences and wisdom, they began to apply the concrete plans on the mental disorders in their daily lives and made actual changes. These changes exercised a positive effect on the past negative view as the experiences and wisdom of their own give benefit to their comrades and their disease made them to contemplate themselves and find a new meaning of life so they could accept their illness as one of useful experiences of life. The conclusion of this study is that a research by the mentally disabled patients as researchers and helpers is an approach of looking for and learning the way of life that makes the mentally handicapped to get along with others by admitting the limitation of self-control and opening themselves to the others and getting their support and assistance. Ultimately, this is the process of the recovery of human dignity made by respecting themselves and the others. This sort of study also will deepen the understanding of mental disorder and the mentally handicapped and will contribute to alter the approach and perspective on mental disorder. For the universal spread of the study by the disabled themselves, academic research should be supported along with the continuous practices, and above all, social concern and enlightenment are required.
