Abstract The Effects of Reading Log Writing on Reading Attitude and Reader Responses
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of reading log writing on reading attitude and reader responses of elementary and middle school students.
For this purpose, the following questions were set:
1. Is reading log writing effective in improving students' reading attitude? 2. Does reading log writing affect students' reader responses?
A total of 39 third- to ninth-grade students taking private reading classes in Daegu participated in this study. The experiment was performed in a total of 8 sessions―a session per week, 100 minutes per session―from March 6 to May 13, 2017. A reading program using a reading log was applied to reading log writing and they were given extracurricular time to write their own reading log. Reading attitude was determined for its effectiveness in pretest and posttest and t-test was carried out by using an SPSS WIN 18.0 program to analyze the results. To supplement the quantitative analysis, the contents of the reading logs written by the students were categorized according to the reader responses to qualitatively analyze their responses. A survey was conducted on the awareness of reading log writing. This study obtained the following results:
First, reading log writing was effective in improving the students' reading attitude. Specifically, it was more effective in improving reading attitude than writing attitude and was more effective in improving middle school students' reading attitude than that of elementary school children. Second, reading log writing affected the students' reader responses. The reader responses differed by the genres and contents of the texts; middle elementary school children were more likely to show emotional responses, older elementary school children were more likely to show evaluative ones, and middle school students were more likely to show interpretative ones. On the basis of these results, the following conclusion could be drawn: First, since reading log writing positively affects reading attitude, it is necessary to adhere to reading log writing and make it a habit. This is because reading attitude is hard to form in a short term and readers can feel the meanings of reading log writing when they perform it continuously. Second, since reading log writing is a way of summarizing one's own ideas and generating new ideas, teachers need to use it properly. Students can have meaningful experiences when they are given opportunities to read books, reflect on their own ideas and feelings, and make responses.
