The objective of this research is to have an in-depth understanding of the meaning of the protean career orientation of career counselors with long-term interruptions. For further exploration, this subject is delineated into two issue-areas. Firstly, what type of long-term career interruptions do career counselors experience? Secondly, what protean career orientation does a career counselor have if they have had long-term career interruptions? The researcher used a basic qualitative study methodology to explore this issue-area. Eight interview subjects who are currently working as career counselors in universities, specialized high schools, private companies, foundations, and local organizations who have experienced long-term career interruptions were selected based on the principle of theoretical sampling for this study. The researcher collected data through private in-depth interviews and analyzed the data over the course of multiple assessments. The results show eight major categories such as self-examination through protean career orientation, finding lost time, facing planned coincidences, fine-tuning the piano of the mind, learning upon learning, the journey of life with a dream, an unsure future, and a happy voice from the heart. Each category is based on the testimonials of the career counselors that were interviewed. "Finding lost time" and "facing planned coincidences" refer to the career counselors' experiences of marriage, pregnancy, and raising children. During a career interruption, these career counselors focused solely on raising children and later looked back on their lives as their child-raising duties waned. The interview subjects re-learned who they are through critical self-examination of their identity and faced a point where their "lost time" and present come together and the interview subjects wish to work after committing themselves to their roles as mother, wife, and daughter-in-law. They were exposed to the idea of a "career counselor" through educational resources and people around them, and became a career counselor through a series of coincidental events. Their return to employment was only possible because of their passion for it and their facing of the challenge of an identity crisis brought on by a long-term career interruption. "Fine-tuning the piano of my mind," "learning upon learning," "the journey of life with a dream," "an unsure future," "a happy sound from the heart," and "self-examination through protean career orientation" represent the processes career counselors experience who have protean career orientations due to long-term career interruptions. Subjects in these categories continuously study independently and develop career skills in spite of their desire to quit as a result of issues with relationships with superiors and colleagues and adjusting to a work environment. The feedback they received helped the subjects examine themselves and assess what they are lacking. They discovered that the only way to survive in a working environment is to develop oneself by being value-orientated and self-motivated. Through sequential learning at work, the interview subjects experienced subjective career successes, or an accumulation of personal achievements. This learning process gave the subjects more willpower and determination to want to work with their subsequent change in identity. This made them motivated for life and gaining confidence in their work. The first conclusion of this research has become a way for career counselors who have experienced long-term career interruptions for new pursuits through a change in identity from self-examination. Secondly, the career counselors who have protean career orientations and have experienced long-term career interruptions have shown psychological success at sequential learning at the workplace through self-motivated learning. Thirdly, the protean career orientations of career counselors with long-term career interruptions represent their desire to pursue their career based on a set of values, or a calling. The results of the research aim to address the following. Firstly, organizational support and policy-making should encourage diverse role models in career counseling. Secondly, institutional mechanisms should be examined to create timely changes in the employment environment so that more career counselors can maximize their skills and work with a sense of calling. Career counselors should also be provided with psychological stability which can be attained by creating more diverse career paths through protean career orientations based on personal values and self-motivated attitudes. Thirdly, contracted career counselors should not have to worry about job stability while still continuously challenging themselves in their career and work hard to open up more opportunities for themselves.
