Abstract
With increasing emphasis on communication skills, attention has been paid to speech education that can help express oneself and communicate with others better. As such, the current study aimed to examine empirically the effectiveness of speech education. Specifically, this study focused on investigating how speech education would affect self-perceived communication competence, communication apprehension, and interpersonal attraction toward team members. Study 1 used the Solomon 4-group design and gave speech education in a field setting which was commonly used to train people from various companies and organizations. Study 2 used a survey design to verify some of the study 1 findings. Study 2 recruited individuals who indicated to have received speech education in the past at least once and those who indicated to have not received any speech education.
The findings of study 1 showed that speech education receivers did not differ from those who did not receive speech education in terms of self-perceived communication competence and communication apprehension. But speech education receivers showed a higher level of attraction about working with team members. The findings of study 2 also showed that individuals who self-reported to have had speech trainings did not have higher communication competence or lower communication apprehension than those who self-reported to have not had any speech trainings. However, individuals who self-reported to have had speech trainings indicated greater attraction working with team members than those who self-reported to have not had any speech trainings.
An interesting finding of study 2 was that when individuals who self-reported to have not had any speech trainings indicated greater expectation about the effectiveness of speech training than those who self-reported to have had speech trainings indicated their satisfaction about the effectiveness of speech training. This may indicate that because of no actual speech training experience, individuals who self-reported to have not had any speech trainings simply imagine how beneficial speech training could be. On the other hand, those who self-reported to have had speech trainings may have experienced that their speech training fell short of their expectation. A shortcoming of the current studies was that because participants self-reported their communication skills, it was unknown if speech training might actually have increased an objective level of communication skills. Future research will need to assess both participants’ subjective evaluation and some form of objective evaluations (e.g., speech professionals’ assessment or peers’ assessment of a given individual) of communication skills.
In addition, for those who considered speech training to be effective, communication apprehension was positively related to attraction about working with team members. For individuals who did not receive any speech training, those with higher expectation showed greater communication competence. These findings may indicate that speech training can produce different outcomes for various individuals and that individualized speech training tailored for each individual’s strengths and weaknesses can be more effective.
Study 2 found that participants considered communication skills to be important for family interaction, relationship with coworkers, and being successful in one’s career. This finding indicates the necessity of continued attention to communication skills and theory development. In short, this research empirically examined how speech training can be effective and the findings of two studies suggest the types of future directions that scholars and practitioners in speech communication and public speaking training may need to consider.
