The Sliding Mode Control (SMC) is one of the robust control techniques which has invariabilities against parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. On the other hand, it has imperfections in the sliding mode such as delays and hysteresis will conspire to produce a high frequency motion known as chattering. In other words, the chattering phenomenon is the effect of the discontinuous nature of control and has many negative effects in real world applications since it may damage the control actuator and stir up the undesirable unmodeled dynamics. For this reason, sliding mode control is generally recognized as very robust and simple scheme to implement, but many people have done research and put efforts to reduce this phenomenon. In this paper, we propose a Second Order Sliding Mode Control (SOSMC) using the new sliding surface with the acceleration information of the system to overcome the chattering, pass the signal through the integrator, which similarly acts as a low pass filter and apply the smoothly processed input to the plant. In addition, we compared the conventional SMC using the sign function with the conventional SMC using the saturation function with the proposed scheme, tried to verify the chattering reduction effect and to demonstrate the superiority of the control precision. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the experiments were conducted by applying it to a DC motor system.
