To that end, we tend to seek out those with whom we can communicate well, who can safeguard confidentiality, or simply to whom we can relate easily. These are the very attributes that describe the office of coach. While the profession of coaching has applied itself mainly to fostering leadership roles in large corporate settings, the demand for coaching in the areas of education, career, and personal life is expected to proliferate in the years to come. And in preparation for meeting such a growing demand, it is imperative that this profession garner a greater public recognition and trust. The two approaches to achieving this goal include establishing the credibility and reputation of the coach and enforcing the effectiveness of the coaching process, as manifested by how well the coachee has perceived the message during his or her dialogue with the coach. Such effectiveness, however, is predicated not on mere linguistic skills, but more on the strict adherence to the essence of coaching principles. This research comes from my desire to promulgate the effectiveness of coaching principles as found in the classics, and to propose an alternative coaching methodology based on them. To that end, I conducted a qualitative research by placing myself in the position of a coachee, and wanted to present the principles of coaching based on the core logic of 『The Great Learning (大學)』 and 『The Doctrine of the Mean (中庸)』. And based on what I had applied during the actual coaching dialogues, I was able to discover how such coaching principles work to transform the coachee’s perception. In 『The Great Learning (大學)』, which explains the subject and method of knowledge, the concept of emotions was found to be the subject of emotions and recognition. As it is the principle of coaching to deal with the essence (being) rather than the end (task, issue), I found that when the emotions themselves understand properly (that is gyuk-mul-chi-ji), the coachee’s issue becomes easier to resolve. Put differently, when people understand that emotion is not caused by external causes, but by one’s necessity, they will find themselves looking for answers to meet their own needs and increasing their willingness to do so. Through 『The Doctrine of the Mean (中庸)』, I attempted to explain how “the existing self” exists, while reaffirming the importance of existence (sex, gender). As a result, I was able to confirm, first, that I am a member of 3 person community (mother-father-myself), and, second, that “you and I” are not mutually exclusive, as illustrated in the concept of ‘Riilbunsu’ (理一分殊). From the wisdom of King Soon In 『The Doctrine of the Mean(中庸)』, I found the methodology of coaching and suggested how this methodology worked. Even in the smallest words, I find clues to the paradigm of recognition, I stressed that I could ask for help in finding a sense of good instead of devil (hatred). The effectiveness of the Both-end (兩端) approach has been presented through examples of X-cross(交叉, 교차) approaches, as commendable questions arise. I have regarded the three pillars of philosophy - ontology, epistemology and axiology - as clues to the paradigm shift. I, therefore, thought that, by grasping what (being-knowing-feeling) is in the conversation, it would be easier for the coach to make the coachee’s cognitive transition. As stated in the Triple Learning Model, I suggested focusing on the thought process instead of on the behavior when the coach gives feedback to coachee. Considering the fact that a philosophical dialogue can brighten people’s perception, I think philosophy-based-coaching can be applied as one of coaching methodologies. It is the result of this research that shows the possibility of combining the principles contained in the classics with the coaching.
