The purpose of this article is to discuss formation and onomasiological characteristics of Neologisms of Korean and Chinese language as of 2015 from the contrastive linguistics viewpoint. Prior to main discussion, Chapter 2 explained the concept of neologisms according the definition provided in dictionary and, then, that provided by scholars. And then, characteristics of Korean and Chinese neologisms were examined by word type and word class. In this study, Korean new words were based on the [2015 Neologisms] and 2015 new words from [2016 Neologisms and Use Frequency Survey] published by National Institute of Korean Language, and a total of 194 Neologisms - 75 words (excluding phrases) from 2015 Neologisms and 119 words (excluding phrases) from 2016 neologisms and Use Frequency Survey –were extracted. As for Chinese new words, 258 words (excluding phrases) were selected from 2015 Chinese neologisms published by National Language Resource Monitoring Agency. In Chapter 3, the 194 Korean neologisms and 258 Chinese Neologisms were onomasiologically categorized into simple words, derivatives, compound words, and abbreviations and analyzed the distribution, with the new words of both languages classified and presented in a table. New words of both languages did not have many simple words. Only new loanword was found in Korean while both original Neologisms and new loanword were found in Chinese. Regarding derivatives, 53 words, 27.3% of the Korean Neologisms were derivatives and 50 words, 20.0%, in Chinese. In both languages, suffixal derivatives had more coinage ability than prefixal derivatives . In Korean, there were two types of prefixal derivatives – native prefix and Chinese character prefix –while there was only one type – Chinese character prefix – in Chinese. There were different types of suffixal derivatives in Korean, and two types –Chinese character suffixal derivatives and foreign suffixal derivative- in Chinese. However, there was only one foreign suffixal derivative in Chinese. As for compound words, there were four types in Korean and all of them were nouns. Chinese compound words had more coinage ability than Korean compound words and the formation styles were more diverse as well. There are four types of blends: AD, BD, ABD, and ACD. However, only AD, BD, and ABD types were found in Korean language, and only AD and ACD types in Chinese. Blends are rarely used in Chinese due to lack of spacing. Abbreviations of Korean and Chinese neologisms can be divided into acronym, Overall, regarding distribution of Korean neologisms, compound words and abbreviations had the highest coinage ability and, among Chinese neologisms, compound words, which accounted for the half of neologisms, had the highest coinage ability. The frequencies of derivatives and abbreviations were similar between Korean and Chinese. Chapter 4 provided summary of this study.
