The Effects of Metacognitive Awareness Using Self-Evaluation on High School Learners' Reading Strategy Instruction and Reading Ability
The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of metacognitive awareness using self-evaluation on high school learners' reading strategy instruction and reading ability. To achieve this goal, 52 high school students were selected and divided randomly into two groups: 26 students for a control group and 26 students for an experimental group. For 4 weeks, the students in both groups were given reading strategy instruction. After each instruction, the former group solved 4 questions using the strategy learned and the latter solved 2 questions and filled out self-evaluation sheet. The results from the post reading test were analyzed in order to compare the overall reading achievement between the control group and the experimental group. Also, survey questions were used to identify the changes in participants' attitudes toward strategy instruction. In addition, in-depth interview was conducted to describe students responses toward reading strategy instruction and the use of self-evaluation. The findings of this study were as follows: First, there was significant difference in reading scores between the control group and the experimental group. Although the changes of the control group was also statistically significant, the experimental group showed more improvements between scores in pre-test and post-test than those in the control group. Second, the experimental group showed statistically significant improvements in two reading parts, grasping logical relations and context. It shows that strategy instruction has positive effects on these two parts because learners should use strategies to infer hidden meanings in the text. Third, the data from survey questions on attitudes indicated that there was significant difference in learners' attitudes between the control group and the experimental group. It was especially effective in raising learners' awareness of the strategy use and increasing learning motivation. Lastly, students' reponses to the in-depth interview showed that they were satisfied with strategy instruction and using self-evaluation in the training process. It was effective in enhancing self-directed learning and motivation although some learners found it difficult to learn all the strategies and apply them to reading tasks. Based on the findings, some pedagogical implications for classroom applications are as follows. First, reading strategy instruction and using self-evaluation have a positive impact on learners' reading ability. Therefore, teachers should select the target strategies for the lesson objectives and provide learners with opportunities to practice them and utilize self-evaluation. Second, reading strategy instruction should be a long-term plan. Well-planned instruction will lead to improvements in learners' reading ability and strategy use, making them autonomous.
