The Effect of Reading Aloud Activity Using on-line Computer Games on Primary school Children's Reading Fluency and Word Recognition
The goal of this study is to analyze the effects of an English learning online computer game on Korean elementary school students’ prosodic reading and word recognition. To achieve the goal, 36 Elementary school students in 5th grade who finished the 4th stage of the English learning computer game ‘Hodoo English’ are selected. Four lessons spanning the beginning, middle, and end of the 60 lessons in the fourth stage of the game were chosen for analysis. Learners' recorded voices from these four lessons were collected and analyzed. The voices are scored by using a prosodic reading rubric, word recognition test, and phonetic analysis. The scores are statistically analyzed by using paired t-test, and the result is as below. First, the use of the English learning computer game has increased learners’ prosodic reading scores significantly. The genre of game that this research used is a role-playing game, which gave learners the feeling of experiencing a real conversation with a native speaker. Learners have also provided plenty of voice input, which helps grow learners’ expressive reading ability. Also, word recognition accuracy has increased significantly. On average, learners read sentences more than 7,000 times while they played the 4th stage of the game. This enabled learners to repeatedly read aloud the same words and improve their accuracy of reading words. Furthermore, by using a game, learners didn’t get bored while they repeatedly read, and this helped learners maintain their study for a long time. Lastly, learners’ speech prosody became more similar to a native speaker’s. Their voice changed to have higher and lower pitch than before, which makes rich intonation. And the speed of reading sentences increased, which means learners eliminated unnecessary pauses while reading sentences. Based on the results of this study, several suggestions for learning prosodic reading and future studies are as follows. First, use of an English learning computer game for developing learners’ reading fluency is advisable. A computer game helps learners keep practicing reading repeatedly with its entertaining nature. Also, it can give valuable audio inputs to develop learners’ expressive reading. Second, more games should be created that develop reading fluency by using speech recognition technology. These games could be especially powerful if teachers and parents could input their own text, which could be chosen to match the learner's interests or the school's curriculum. Third, role-playing games are effective to make students engage in conversation situations. Therefore, reading instruction can be well delivered by using role-playing games. Lastly, follow-up studies that compare learners’ reading fluency before and after using an English learning computer game should be conducted.
