The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of music drama activities using Aesop's fables on the prosocial behaviors of three-year- old preschoolers and the development of their musical expressiveness. Two research questions were posed: 1. What influence do music drama activities that utilize Aesop's fables exert on the prosocial behaviors of three-year-olds? 2. What influence do music drama activities that utilize Aesop's fables exert on the development of their musical expressiveness? The subjects in this study were 28 selected three-year-olds(an experimental group of 14 and a control group of 14) in a daycare center located in a district of Seoul. Out of them, the 14 preschoolers of the experimental group engaged in music drama activities using Aesop's fables, and the 14 preschoolers of the control group listened to Aesop's fables and engaged in activities in accordance with the Nuri curriculum. The experiment was implemented by providing the music drama activities using Aesop's fables 16 times for eight weeks, from October 17 to December 9, 2016, twice a week, 30 minutes per session. After a pretest was conducted, a pilot study was made, and a posttest was carried out after the experiment was implemented. As for Aesop's fables, 10 fables that were appropriate for young children's prosociability and musical expressiveness were selected in consideration of the pro- sociability and musical expressiveness of preschoolers. The validity of the selected fables was tested by an early childhood education professor, a teacher with seven years of teaching experience and working on her Ph.D. in early childhood education and three early childhood teachers with five years or more of experience. And then songs were prepared. Some were composed by this researcher, and others contained the theme melodies of existing songs and music. Finally, activities for 16 sessions of a music drama were organized by reflecting the development and interest of preschoolers and utilizing the educational activity materials of the Nuri curriculum for western ages 3 to 5 that were presented by the Ministry of Health and Welfare(2012). As for instrumentation, the instrument used to evaluate the prosocial behaviors of the preschoolers was Kim(2003)'s PBSYC for teachers, which was used in Yoon & Kim(2006)'s study. The instrument used to assess the development of their musical expressiveness was Kim(2004)'s Musical Expressiveness Inventory, which modified the 89-item Music Development Inventory presented by Lorton and Walley in "Recording Skills Development in Music." The collected pretest and posttest data were analyzed by SPSS 16.0 for Windows. Statistical data on mean and standard deviation for the pretest and posttest scores were obtained, and paired-samples t-test was carried out to determine whether the activities had any effects on the prosocial behaviors of the preschoolers and the development of their musical expressiveness. To test the reliability of the inventories, Cronbach alpha coefficients were calculated. The findings of the stud were as follows: First, concerning prosocial behaviors, the experimental group that engaged in the music drama activities using the Aesop's fables showed significant improvements than the control group that didn't. The music drama activities were found to have positive effects on every subfactor of prosocial behaviors that were leadership, helping, communication, initiative consideration, approaching, sharing, empathy and regulation. Second, regarding the development of musical expressiveness, the experimental group that engaged in the music drama activities using the Aesop's fables showed more improvements than the control group that didn't. The music drama activities were found to have positive effects on the development of singing, playing musical instruments, expressing through the body and making music, which were the subareas of musical expressiveness. The above-mentioned findings illustrated that the music drama activities which used the Aesop's fables exercised positive influences on the prosocial behaviors of the experimental group preschoolers and the development of their musical expressiveness. Therefore it will effectively improve the prosocial behaviors of preschoolers and step up the development of their musical expressiveness when music drama activities are conducted using Aesop's fables on a continual basis in the early childhood education sector in consideration of their developmental levels and interests.
