At the 2008 World Economic Forum, Bill Gates stressed that corporate contribution to social causes is not just a social responsibility but an obligation, thus turning it into a global issue. Interest in cause-related marketing as a corporate communication strategy has been growing in Korea. It is used not only for purchasing intention, but also as a competitive differentiation or brand positioning tool used for the strategic purpose of demonstrating corporate social responsibility. Thus companies using cause-related marketing can achieve effects like brand image creation, improvements in brand awareness and brand attitude, and strengthening of purchasing intention. For their part, consumers can gain benefits such as experiencing better value, higher satisfaction, and realization of their personal identities in relation to prosocial values. In particular, companies are actively drawing on the art and culture to come up with more creative and differentiated socially responsible activities. Such activities can affect not just the purchasing intention of consumers, but also raise brand awareness through the art and culture and create a sense of solidarity through joint participation in social causes. An example of combining social issues with the art and culture can be seen in the Marymond brand. Marymond produces and sells design products that reinterpret artworks created during horticultural therapy sessions by former comfort women interned by the Japanese Imperial Army. The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of cause-related marketing that utilizes art on consumer response and purchasing attitude through two empirical studies. First of all, the purpose of analyzing the influence of brand value on purchasing intention is to analyze the influence of brand values in relation to Marymond’s cause-related marketing. Also, the aim of this study is to determine consumer response to the cause-related marketing that utilizes the art and culture by establishing corporate associations and cause-brand fit and examining their effects on purchasing intention and recommend purpose. There upon the study seeks to investigate the influence of cause-related marketing on product evaluation by analyzing the moderating effects of shopping motivation in relation to Marymond’s cause-related marketing on consumer response, purchasing intention and recommend purpose. As a result of the first empirical study, emotional value, aesthetic value, and ethical value have positive effects on purchasing intention among the sub-factors of brand value in relation to Marymond’s cause-related marketing. This suggests that consumers can form a brand attitude through cause-related marketing as well as product function and price, and that they can have a willingness to empathize and participate in social issues utilizing arts. The results of the second empirical analysis show that the relationship between CSR and CA association have positive effects on purchasing intention and recommend purpose. In other words, this shows that the activities promoted by cause-related marketing exert an influence on purchasing intention and recommend purpose only when consumers can understand and relate to them. Second, it was found that cause-brand fit in cause-related marketing activities had positive effects on consumer response. This suggests that cause-related marketing needs to pay attention to the task of getting consumers to infer the fit between the company and the cause in question. Third, it can be seen that pragmatism, a shopping motivation for consumers, has a moderating effect on the relationship between corporate associations and product evaluation in cause-related marketing activities. It was found that as the pragmatism of consumers’ shopping motivation increases, the influence of corporate associations on product evaluation decreases. This implies that companies should link their products to cause-related marketing in ways that allow consumers to pursue the creation of economic value in connection with public relations marketing activities and products. This study makes a theoretical contribution in its field by using consumer responses based on cause-related marketing through the art and culture as brand values, and determining the effects there of on product evaluation. Another significance of the study lies in its examination of consumer responses to corporate efforts to fulfill their social responsibilities through corporate associations and cause-brand fit. Lastly, this study istinguishes itself from previous research in its use of shopping motivation, which lies on the side of consumer action, as a moderator variable in the empirical study of cause-related marketing. The present study sought to explore the potential of cause-related corporate activities by examining consumer responses to cause-related marketing through the art and culture. It is hoped that the study will provide suggestions for future research on the effectiveness of cause-related marketing through the art and culture.
