Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive characteristics of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), focusing on General Ability Index (GAI) and Cognitive Proficiency Index (CPI) of Korean Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition (K-WISC-IV). Previous studies for ADHD using WISC showed significantly lower scores of subtest related to attention such as digit span, arithmetic, or coding. However, previous studies of ADHD using K-WISC-IV in Korea is little. It is expected that our findings would be helpful in understanding cognitive deficits shown at K-WISC-IV for children with ADHD.
Methods: Children with ADHD were diagnosed based on DSM-IV or DSM-5 by licensed psychiatrist, and the data of normal children were obtained from K-WISC-IV standardization sample by random sampling. Full Scale IQ (FSIQ), GAI, and CPI of K-WISC-IV for a group of 23 children with ADHD were compared to those of the matched control 23 children. Scores of mean and standard deviation for all indexes and subtests were calculated in two groups. Mean differences between groups or within a ADHD group were testified by t-test and Cohen’s d.
Results: All indexes in ADHD group ranged from 92.00 to 98.57 except for CPI, and all indexes in matched control group ranged from 99.30 to 103.91. FSIQ and CPI of ADHD group was significantly lower compared to the matched control group, showing ‘Large’ effect size. Within ADHD group, GAI score was the highest one, and CPI was the lowest one among the three indexes (FSIQ, GAI, and CPI). Same as the previous studies, the mean differences between FSIQ and GAI/GAI and CPI were statistically significant in group with ADHD, showing ‘Large’ effect size.
Conclusion: Compared to the matched control group, children with ADHD showed significantly lower FSIQ and CPI, showing ‘Large’ effect size. Even within ADHD group, the mean differences between FSIQ and GAI/GAI and CPI was statistically significant, showing ‘Large’ effect size. It is expected that the cognitive characteristics related to attention and information processing in children with ADHD could be found through the difference of score of GAI and CPI in K-WISC-IV.
