The purpose of this study is to analyze the college students' adaptation to college life depending on their communication skills and conflict management types. Hence, research subjects are made as follows:
Subject 1. Is there a difference in college students' communication skills depending on their background variables(gender, major, etc.)? Subject 2. Is there a difference in college students' conflict management types depending on their background variables(gender, major, etc.)? Subject 3. Do college students' communication skills affect their adaptation to college life? Subject 4. Do college students' conflict management types affect their adaptation to college life?
For this study a self-report survey was conducted from March 14 to March 31, 2017 on colllege students' communication skills, conflict management types and adaptation to college life targeting 322 students in a four-year-course college in Seoul. Consequently, out of a total of 322 questionnaires, 285 had been collected, and 276 included in the final analysis, except for 9 questionnaires of unfaithful or no answer (Available return rate : 85.7%). For a statistical test on the study model, statistical analysis has been made through the SPSS 21.0 program, and hypothesis verifications made by independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) and Duncan's post verification, Pearson's correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The result of this study can be summarized as follows: First, it showed a difference in college students' communication skills depending on their gender and major. In communication, female students showed more communication, overcoming stereotype thinking, than male students, and students in natural science track had most creative communication compared with students in other academic tracks. Second, it showed a difference in conflict management types depending on college students' grades and majors. In conflict management types, the score for a problem solving method was higher in the second grade than in the first grade, and higher in the third grade than in the second grade. Meanwhile, in terms of their majors, students in natural science track had the highest score in compromise and concession methods. Third, college students' communication skills are shown to have a significant effect on their adaptation to college life. In subelements of communication skills, it showed positive relationships in the realms of information gathering, leading communication and understanding of others' viewpoints. Among them, creative communication showed a positive relationship with social, individual- emotion, and college environment adaptations, while self-disclosure had a positive relationship with academic, social, and college environment adaptations. Fourth, college students' conflict management types are shown to have a significant effect on their adaptation to college life. It is found that college students' academic, social, individual-emotion, and college environment adaptation levels increased when using problem-solving methods in conflict situations, while those levels decreased when using coercion and evasion methods. How to compromise showed a positive relationship with social and individual-emotion adaptations. The findings from this study show that college students' communication skills and conflict management types have a significant effect on adaptation to college life. Therefore, this study has more significance in that it can be the primary data for college students to initiate better college life satisfaction and adaptation by developing their effective communication skills, and wise conflict management and coping methods.
