This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the disaster by heavy snowfall in South Korea based on the disaster yearbooks published from 1979 to 2014. We analyses the spatial distributions and temporal changes of disaster caused by heavy snowfall as well as the damage related to the snow depth. Then, we classify the regions of disaster by heavy snowfall and derive the results as following. First, there were larger number of days with disaster due to snowfall at Yeongdong, the east coast of Gyeongbuk, and the west coast of Honam, all known as heavy snowfall region. In contrast, there were large number of casualties by heavy snowfall in the coastal region and there were large property loss of damage in the metropolitan area near Seoul, Chungbuk, Chungnam, and the west coast of Honam. In addition, the damaged regions were classified by month since the proportion of damage by heavy snowfall in early, mid, and late winter varied by region. Second, the longer the time with disaster lasts, the more the distribution of the number of days with disaster differs from that of the property loss of damage. Chungcheong inland showed the highest property loss even though Yeongdong and the west coast of Honam had the largest number of days with disaster by heavy showfall during the 2000s. It means that the spatial distribution of the property loss is not correlated to the spatial distribution of the number of days with disaster. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the monthly property loss showed that the property loss in January, February, and December of every year tended to widen, but the region that the damage was concentrated in differed from month to month. Third, according to the change in the property loss by heavy snowfall and the snow depth, there was no major damage by heavy snowfall in 1980∼1999 when the new snowfall tended to decrease by -1.4 cm/year. However, the fluctuation in the sum of new snowfall in the 2000s was also the most unstable, resulting in heavy damage by heavy snowfall. In addition, all regions in South Korea show that the property loss caused by heavy snowfall has significant positive correlation with the snow depth. The sensitivity on the snow depth is different depending on the region, but the property loss by heavy snowfall increases as the sum of new snowfall and the maximum snow depth increase. Finally, the characteristics of the damage by heavy snowfall vary according to the region. Therefore, we divide South Korea into seven types of disaster area through the factor analysis and cluster analysis. This could provide useful information to predict the damage by heavy snowfall as the irregularity of climate change increases.
