The purpose of this study aimed at doing research on our people`s notion of the color by identifying objects likened to five colors in idiomatic language and analyzing what they symbolize. Such an issue, of course, has its significance in arranging symbolic expressions on five colors of idiomatic language in the first place but ultimately, it intended to identify what significance the five colors usage as symbol of Korean aesthetics has for us living today. As result of reviewing the existence literatures, there have been many previous studies on symbolism of five colors but there are few documents dealing with the five colors that appear in domestic idiomatic language which bears practical utility, which made this study have much significance. In order to proceed this study, targeted materials on symbolic meanings which five colors (black, white, red, yellow, blue) included in idiomatic language that appear in proverb, old sayings, taboo words, good sign words, archaism and fork song have and ideal consciousness which can be deducted from them were collected, arranged and classified by citing existing literatures including pre-sentence dictionary, old sayings and Korean-language dictionary and others. As a result, the black color was symbolized when physical condition was judged not to be good, beautiful or bad. The white color was symbolized in case he or she was old or it was good in terms of personality or character or physical condition was beautiful. In addition, the red color was analyzed to be symbolized in case quality was good or it was judged to be good object seemingly or it was economically poor or the result of work and greedy condition were likened. The yellow color was classified to be symbolized in case it was good sign or condition of disturbance and interfere or immature condition of ability and growth or physical disease. Finally, the blue color was analyzed to symbolize being young, beautiful in terms of shape or physical condition or being excellent in terms of ability and level. Having discovered it was possible to figure out our people`s intrinsic emotion and color consciousness by means of idiomatic language has the first significance. Furthermore, considering exceptional quality that color characteristic in such an idiomatic language represents our people`s emotion and culture intensively, the result of this study can be considered to contain more intensive significance, for it is consistently valid considering such an idiomatic language is being used widely until modern times.
