The purpose of this study is to verify the effects of the group counseling program using wall painting carried out on the maladjusted adolescents in school; if it effects on emotional intelligence and school adaptation.
In order to achieve the goal, this study was carried out the school adjustment scale for the odd students out of a B middle school located in H gu, B city. 24 students of the bottom 25% who wished to participate in the program were selected, who were divided into two groups. A 12-student group was assigned to an experimental group and the other 12-student group to a control group. The program was carried out for the experimental group for two sessions per week, i.e. 10 times, 90 minutes each, while not a single treatment was applied to the control group. As the program was applied, the program for experimental group was paused for 2 weeks due to the influenza and recommenced on February 2nd. As a result, the program was conducted twice a week from January 2nd to 20th, 2017, and from February 2nd to 9th, 2017, with the exception of the rest period. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, the pre- and the post-test for the emotional intelligence scale and the school adjustment scale were conducted out for both the control group and the experimental group. By using SPSS / WIN +22.0 statistical programs, the mean and standard deviation for each scale were calculated.
To verify the difference between the experimental and the control group, the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and the multivariate analysis of means (MANOVA) were performed putting the pre-test scores as a covariate.
The results of the study are as follows:
First, the test score of emotional intelligence of the experimental group after participating in the group counseling program using wall painting was more significantly improved than that of the control group.
Second, the test score of school adjustment of the experimental group after participating in the group counseling program using wall painting was more significantly improved than that of the control group.
Considering the results of the study, it is clear that the group counseling program using wall painting for the maladjusted adolescents in middle school helps the participants adapt to the school, and improve their emotional intelligence.
Finally, the limitations on the current study and recommendations for future research are discussed.
Key words: group wall painting, maladjusted adolescents in school, emotional intelligence, school adaptation.
