In recent years, the importance of service innovation as a driving force for economic growth has been recognized, and the importance of research on service-oriented innovation is increasing. Service innovation is no longer a side activity of product innovation in a business environment, but an independent and important topic in itself. Moreover, service innovation has received much attention as an approach to creating new markets and transforming existing services to secure a sustainable competitive advantage. Studies on innovation in the past have focused on Product Innovation and Process Innovation which are innovations in the manufacturing industry, whereas recent studies lean more towards service innovation as the service industry develops and begins to account for a greater portion. Nonetheless, existing service innovation research is mainly focused on innovation in the service sector, and research on service innovation in the manufacturing sector is relatively insufficient. Recent studies have claimed that much of the innovation effort in the manufacturing industry is also related to service innovation, but the service innovation effort’s approach in the manufacturing sector is limited to service innovation in the narrow sense such as the term “Servitization” or “Servicisation”. This paper is an empirical study on service innovation from the perspective of domestic manufacturing companies, which can be classified as follows: Types of innovation (service innovation), the performance aspect of service innovation performance, and the source of service innovation. First, in the initial study, I reviewed the literature on the concepts and types of service innovation and related theories. The literature review provided insight on service, service innovation and research perspective on service innovation. Secondly, I conducted an empirical analysis on manufacturing firm’s service innovation and financial performance. On the KISVALUE financial data, the microdata of “2014 Korean Innovation Survey’, which measures various innovation activities during the period of 2011-2013, and the financial performance data 1-2 years (2013-2014) after the said firm completed the innovation were matched to form the dataset and were used as the empirical analysis data. The groups were divided into firms who performed only the non-service innovation and firms who performed service innovation simultaneously. In order to determine whether the financial performance of a company that achieved service innovation and non-service innovation simultaneously is different from that of a firm who achieved only non-service innovation, Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test was performed. Thirdly, empirical analysis of manufacturing firm’s service innovation and non-service innovation success factors were conducted. In particular, noting that not all innovation activities are conducted by R&D institutes or considered as R&D, I conducted an empirical analysis on the importance of informal R & D in service innovation in terms of the source of innovation. The analysis data used the '2014 Korean Innovation Survey 2014' microdata in the same way as the second study, and the multivariate probit model, which assumes that complementary decision making is allowed, considering the simultaneous occurrence of innovation performance. The results obtained from the studies above are as follows. The first literature review confirmed the perspective on service innovation in the manufacturing sector through modern comprehensive approach towards innovation in the manufacturing sector and the service sector. This study aims to contribute to the demarcation approach, which claims that manufacturing firm and service firm’s service innovation should be measured differently, and the integration approach, which believes that service innovation can occur in both manufacturing firms and service firms. Additionally, the study has set the frame to re-classify technology innovation types and service innovation types using the service innovation 4D model. The second empirical analysis affirmed that in terms of innovation performance, manufacturing firms that performed service innovation and non-service innovation simultaneously has shown better financial performance (operative performance and productivity) after the point of innovation completion compared to firms that only focused on non-service innovation. The additional analysis confirmed a substantial increase in sales profit per employee, sales per employee, and sales increase per employee through comparing the financial performance of firms that perform only non-service innovation and firms that also perform service innovation at the point of the innovation to compare financial performance. Furthermore, few indexes proved service innovation performance is higher in low and medium tech industries than in high-tech industries. The third study confirms that informal R&D factors can positively affect manufacturing firms' process of creating new services. Among them, cooperation with advanced manufacturing technology, market prospecting, design, and cooperation with public customers was found to have a significant influence on service innovation success. Informal R&D factors also had a significant impact on non-service innovation, but it is different from the factors influencing service innovation. Market research and design were the same factors as non-service innovation, but external knowledge purchase was found to be a significant influence factor, unlike service innovation. Cooperation with public customers has a positive effect on service innovation, while cooperation with private customers has a significant influence on non-service innovation. In addition, formal R&D, which is the existing influential variable, does not determine the success of service innovation, and in non-service innovation, external R&D factor among formal R&D factors has proven to have a positive effect. These findings can have the following implications. First, it is confirmed that compared to firms that performed only non-service innovation, firms that perform service innovation simultaneously have better performance. This finding suggests that the domestic economy is moving towards an advanced service economy, and thus companies are presented with an indirect reason to pay attention to service-related innovation activities. Second, in order to achieve service innovation, informal R&D factors rather than linear R&D models that require an investment of funds including internal/external R&D and joint R&D proved to be more effective for innovation success. Although formal R&D factors are still valid for non-service innovation, if the focus is on service innovation, informal R&D factors must be considered and it is crucial to recognize variables that need to be considered for non-service innovation may differ. Moreover, existing studies value cooperation with the customers as an important factor for the success of service innovation while this study has proven that cooperation with public and private clients is a differentiating factor for innovation in each type of innovation. Third, politically, current innovative SMEs should be supported through expanding the existing categorization from technology innovation and management innovation to service innovation. In order to do so, it is necessary to incorporate it into relevant laws based on clear definition of service innovation. In addition, there is a limit to R & D first policy and high-tech industry-oriented policy to support stagnant domestic manufacturing firms. In other words, it is necessary to adopt a policy of continuous service innovation support for all industries including medium to low-tech industries, away from existing domestic R&D-oriented support policies and short-term product innovation-oriented growth policies focused on high-tech industries. In short, this paper expands the concept of service innovation through service innovation frame in existing innovation studies to further analyze firm’s financial performance and service innovation success factors through service innovation. As the results of the study, manufacturing firm’s service innovation efforts are proven to be practically correlated to financial performance, and the need to recognize the validity of innovation acquired through informal R&D factors rather than linear R&D models was confirmed. In other words, quantitative R&D policies where you invest more to achieve more should be avoided and diversification of the source of innovation investment and service innovation that increases customer or user’s value through investing appropriate resources should be the focus for future research and corporate activities. However, in conducting this study, the types of service innovation the current innovation research could grasp were limited. It is necessary for future studies to separate types of service innovation based on broad understanding of service innovation, and to study differentiated innovation strategies for each type.
