This study comes from the process of seek..ing the flow from Creation to Extinction. It describes the journey to discover the meaning of Creation and Extinction in the flux of time and shapes it to the white scenery of wound and healing. It notates how the formative language expresses the subject by analyzing works’ creation background, the rationale behind their creation processes, their formative properties and their expression methods.
The past, present and future creates lives repeating creating and extinction. Creation is extinguished and another creation occurs on the top of its residue. The world repeats itself repeating its creation and extinction. Works began as a mean to look at myself in the reality of life, a continuum of suffering, and to think of beauty as a way of understanding this world and to see the world with love and understanding.
Looking at beauty, it has ugliness, and ugliness has beauty. The conflicting concept of beauty and ugliness cannot exist alone. Beautiful things are near to young and fresh lives, and ugly things are near to old and dying ones. We praise the value of beauty because we are trying to be afraid of and avoid from aging and dying.
Beauty has been transformed into various forms in each era. The standard of human beauty, for example, pursues a beautiful well-proportioned figure in modern times, but 100 years ago, the most beautiful was the woman who could fertilize. From the standards of beautiful figures, the beauty is the obvious reflection of the times. But in more fundamental point of view, it is doubt that it would be the ultimate beauty that is the one that goes through the boundaries that can be easily broken down at any time depending on the time. It is thought that the beauty that is sublimated into true one is truly deep.
Early on, in his book, “The Problems of Philosophy”, Bertrand Russell emphasized on the importance of appearance and reality when you see things. Observing an object, it always made of a dual structure of phenomena and essence. The phenomenon is what can change, and the essence is what does not change. If you see only the phenomenon when you look at an object, you are deceived by each one and can have fun and suffering at the same time. As the tendency to pursue the beauty of youth is stronger, it cannot escape from the pain of aging. On the other hand, however, from the fundamental point of view, youth is beautiful since it is a temporary, time-limited, unsustainable and anxious state and before long youth would disappear. That is to say, it is so valuable and precious because the time of youth is as short as the moment. If life is infinite, nobody knows its value. But this moment is precious because it is a time-limited life. All living things undergoes birth-stay-change-and-destruction. Among them, human beings suffer from birth-oldness-sickness-and-death. And all objects experiences creation-existence-destruction-and-extinction. Therefore life, man, and things are worthy. I defined these changes themselves as beauty and seek to create such beauty as an artwork.
I wanted to bring that moment of beauty of creation and extinction to the instant. Extinction and creation are not in vertical relationship but horizontal one. They coexist on the horizon of time and the meaning of the existence is revived. In the time of the oppression, we are a momentary being and with many pain, joy and sadness in it, trying to express our presence. But as we disappear in near future, the equality of all beings appears. There is nothing that I can actually catch in the repetition of life and death, but the positive power manifested in my mind creates a reality of life.
From the methodological point of view, the principle of natural circulation is expressed by choosing subject of landscape. The reason why I painted the picture with mountains is because many living thing and creatures live in the mountains. The mountain has the enormous vitality. It is filled with various kinds of animals, trees, plants, stones and earth. However, actually in this work, rather than filling a lot of things in the mountains, all the creatures and objects are constantly in the transformation of birth-stay-change-and-destruction, so they are expressed with the principle of blankness in the way of emptying mountains. In addition, I thought that it is essentially faithful for the expression of creation and extinction to draw the winter mountains where the branches are bare rather than the mountains where the green is rich. All creatures disappear someday in the transformation of birth-stay-change-and-destruction. As they disappear, new ones are filled.
I thought the more spatial expression can the more accurately express the flow of birth-stay-change-and-destruction of creatures or objects. The mind of such space was concluded into the restoration of purity and the landscape of healing. The innocence of childhood is not a mind hidden in a framework but one that is infinitely wide and has no end so that it encompasses the sky above the mountain. The mind is so wide and deep that can contain creatures and objects that change. It is mind that is like air without any obstacles so that If you are glad, you are smiling, and if you are sad, you are crying.
This landscape of healing approaches the essential aspect of nature. It is not pretentious or artificial, but accepts the external appearance of life without any filtering. It is faithful to the essential aspect beyond the phenomenal one of the beauty which constantly changes according to the social situation. It doesn’t argue over right and wrong in its own frame but embraces all external objects. It is a state of mind that can be fully immersed in the present with perfect embracement of external objects. This is the right landscape of healing.
