The purpose of this study is to compare the perception of child abuse by Korean and Chinese mothers with elementary school students. The subjects of this study were 340 mothers of 10-12 years old elementary school mothers in Seoul and Beijing. In this process, we used data from 277 South Korean mothers and 283 Chinese mothers, except for 62 Korean and 27 Chinese mothers who responded unfairly. The questionnaire used in this study consisted of two parts in total.
First, we investigated the sociodemographic characteristics of children who were involved in child abuse, by selecting age and sex of children, mother 's age, education level, occupation type, occupation experience, marital status. Second, we used the parental scale developed by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (2007), Jeon Youngsil (2008), Jeju Island (2008) and the Children and Youth Center in Busan to measure perceptions of child abuse. As a research method, frequency analysis of perception of child abuse was conducted and t-test was conducted to compare the differences among the variables. Scheffé's validation by t-test, ANOVA and post-test were used to determine the difference in perception of child abuse by the sociodemographic characteristics of Korea and China survey subjects.
The main results of this study are as follows.
First, there was a statistically significant difference in perceptions of child abuse between Korean and Chinese mothers. Korean mothers were more sensitive and strict about child abuse than Chinese mothers. Second, the higher the education level of Korean mothers, the more sensitive and rigorous the standards of child abuse, but there is no statistically significant difference according to the educational level of Chinese mothers. Third, Korean mother 's 40s can be perceived more strongly as child abuse than their 20s, but Chinese mothers in their 50s had a tendency to perceive abuse more sensitively than mothers in their 20s and 30s. Fourth, Korean mothers' perception of child abuse did not show statistical significance according to occupation type, but a mother of Chinese office / technical person can perceive child abuse more sensitively. Fifth, Korean mothers' perceptions of child abuse without work experience were not statistically significant, but Chinese mothers with work experiences recognized sex abuse more strongly than mothers who had no experience. Sixth, Korean mothers' perceptions of child abuse by marital status did not show statistically significant results, but Chinese mothers with spouses perceived sexual abuse more strongly as abuse than mothers without spouses. Seventh, Korean mothers' perceptions of child abuse did not differ according to their gender, but in the case of Chinese mother's of the girls had stronger perception and understanding of sexual abuse than mother's of the boys. As the problem of child abuse becomes a global issue, the reason why Korean mothers are more sensitive and strict about child abuse standards than Chinese mothers is mainly related to the systematic laws of Korea and effective support for child protection and child abuse prevention. On the other hand, in China, there is no precise definition of child abuse in the law, no professional child protection agencies are established, and no emphasis is placed on parent education. Therefore, Chinese mothers can not recognize abuse as abuse due to lack of understanding about child abuse. Based on the results of this study, although it is a similar culture, it has different characteristics in each country. The results of this study are expected to be helpful in future comparative studies on abuse. In addition, basic research can be provided to raise the current situation of child abuse in China.
