The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways of improving English listening ability of learners by movies and to compare and analyze the affective domain of English listening. In addition, this study aim to examine the relationship between learners' listening ability and the affective domain. Therefore, I would like to emphasize the necessity of listening teaching by movies to improve the English listening skill of Korean high school students. This study is focused on the following two research problems. The problems present in this study are as follows.
First of all, I try to look into how English learning with movies will affect the ability of English listening skill of learners. The experimental group and the control group are divided into two groups to evaluate prior English listening examination. After class, I examine the change of listening ability of the experimental group and the control group.
Secondly, I examined how English learning by movies can affect the learners’ affective domain. In order to conduct this research, experimental research is conducted until September to November, 2016 for 40 second grade high school students of either sex in Gyeonggi - do. 20 learners of the experimental group take English listening class using movies, and 20 students of the control group take English listening class focused on general listening materials. The method of experimental group which take the English listening class by movie is referenced and revised the model of Altman(1989). The class of the control group are conducted in a general way such as listening to English repeatedly.
To summarize the results of the research, the experimental group learners listening to English by movies are found to be statistically significant in improving their listening ability compared to the control group learners who take English listening classes based on general listening materials. In addition, there is no significant difference in the self confidence and the motivation to learn English to both experimental group and control group. However, the interest of the learners in the experimental group is greatly improved, which showed positive effects on affective domain. In conclusion, through this research, English listening education use of movie stimulates the interest of learners. It is also an effective way to improve self confidence in use of English and stimulate learning motivation, thereby enhancing learners’ listening ability. In this research, it is difficult to generalize it, because the sample size is insufficient and it has been experimented with one work. However, it can be more objective effect if long-term experiments are conducted with more learners and movies of different genre. Therefore, the results of this research should continue to follow up on more diverse and effective ways of teaching and learning English using movies.
